Failed my AL DMV written test twice, finally passing on third attempt

Okay so I'm a little embarrassed to admit this but I failed the Alabama DMV written exam twice before I finally got my act together. The first time I literally showed up having read maybe half the handbook and thought I could wing it. Big mistake. Second time I read the whole thing but didn't actually practice any questions and blanked on road signs completely. Got a 68 both times — you need a 76 to pass.

What finally worked for me was finding a decent AL DMV practice test online and doing it over and over until I was consistently hitting 85+. I also went through a study guide that broke things down by topic instead of just reading the handbook front to back like a novel. Took me about a week of 20-30 minutes a day and I passed with an 82 on my third attempt.

For anyone else struggling, the road signs section is brutal if you haven't actually memorized them. Also the right-of-way scenarios — those tripped me up more than anything. Anyone else have specific sections they found harder than expected?

The road signs got me too! I spent like two full evenings just drilling those because I kept mixing up warning signs and regulatory signs. The yellow diamond vs. white rectangle thing seems obvious until you're stressed in that little testing booth. I used a practice test app every morning on my commute for about 10 days and went from failing mocks to scoring a 90 on the real thing. Don't skip the signs, seriously.

Did you use any specific study guide or just the official handbook? I'm scheduled for next Tuesday and honestly the handbook feels like a lot to absorb. My older brother passed his on the first try but he studied for like three weeks which feels like overkill to me. Also curious — how many questions is the actual test? I've seen different numbers online and can't figure out which is right.

30 questions, need 24 correct to pass. Honestly a week of consistent practice is all you need if you're actually focused. The exam tips that helped me most: read every question twice, eliminate obvious wrong answers first, and don't second-guess yourself on signs you studied. Trust your prep.
