ADC exam prep — anyone else struggle with the documentation and MDS coding sections?
I've been a certified activity assistant for 4 years and I'm finally going for the ADC credential. I've been studying for about 5 weeks now and I feel solid on activity programming, therapeutic recreation concepts, and the history of the profession. But the documentation and MDS coding sections are giving me a real headache. I'm not sure if it's because we don't always handle that paperwork ourselves at my facility or if it's just a genuinely dense topic.
I'm averaging about 1.5 hours of study per day and I took my first practice assessment last weekend. I scored 71% overall but only 54% on the documentation domain. The MDS 3.0 Section F questions specifically — about resident preferences and activity engagement — are tricky because the wording is very specific. I keep second-guessing whether a question is asking about the assessment process or the actual coding entries.
I'm giving myself 4 more weeks before I schedule the actual exam. Is that enough time to realistically turn that documentation score around? And has anyone found a good resource specifically for MDS 3.0 content beyond the CMS manual? The CMS guide is accurate but it reads like a legal document and I have trouble retaining it.
MDS 3.0 Section F was my weak spot too. What helped me was finding a RAI Manual training module — CMS puts out free online training for surveyors that explains the intent behind each item. Way more readable than the manual itself.
Four more weeks is definitely enough time if you drill documentation daily. I went from 58% to 79% on that domain in 3 weeks just by doing 20 practice questions every morning before work. Repetition is the only thing that made the MDS language stick for me.
The NAAP study guide has a solid documentation section that's written more accessibly than the CMS materials. I used it alongside the official content and it really helped me understand the logic behind the coding process rather than just memorizing answers.
I passed the ADC on my second attempt. First time I underestimated documentation completely. Second time I gave it equal weight to programming and passed with a 77%. Don't make the same mistake I did assuming field experience covers the formal assessment piece.
