Finally passed ADC after two failed attempts — here's what actually helped

I'll be honest, I almost gave up on this whole thing. Failed the ADC exam in October, then again in February, and I was seriously questioning whether I'd ever get my Australian dental registration. The second time especially hurt because I thought I'd prepared way better — I'd read through the ADEA materials, done some basic revision, thought I was ready. I was not ready.

What finally made the difference for the third attempt was completely overhauling my approach. I stopped passively reading and started doing structured practice. Found a solid ADC practice test bank and hammered through it daily for about six weeks — probably 90 minutes each morning before work. I also finally got a proper ADC study guide that broke down the clinical reasoning sections, not just the science content, because that's where I kept losing marks.

Passed with a comfortable margin last month. Happy to share what resources I used and which topic areas to really focus on — the distribution of questions isn't what you'd expect from just reading the official guidelines.

This is so encouraging to read. I'm sitting the ADC for the first time in August and the clinical scenario questions are destroying me in practice. Can I ask which study guide you ended up using? I've been through three different ones and they all feel like they're just rehashing the same basic science without really teaching you how to think through a case the way the exam wants.

Two fails before a pass is more common than people admit — I know at least four people in my cohort who went through the same thing. The exam tips that helped me most were around time management in the written component. I was spending way too long on the questions I wasn't sure about. Once I started flagging and moving on, my scores in timed practice jumped noticeably. Also, don't neglect pharmacology. It always shows up more than expected.

Congrats! Six weeks of 90-minute daily sessions is serious commitment. For anyone else prepping right now — the ADC practice test questions on infection control and scope of practice are worth drilling specifically. Those came up a lot for me and they're very Australia-specific, so overseas training doesn't always prepare you well for them.
