Finally passed 1Z0-082 after two attempts — what actually worked for me

So I cleared the Oracle Database Administration I exam last week with a 78%, and honestly I need to share what changed between my first failed attempt and the second one because the difference was huge. First time I just read through the Oracle documentation and watched some YouTube videos. Big mistake. I failed with a 61% and had no idea where I went wrong.

What turned things around was finding a solid 1Z0 082 practice test and committing to it daily for about four weeks. I was doing 30-40 questions every morning before work. The practice exams I used actually explained WHY each answer was right or wrong, which is how I finally got the hang of the trickier topics like undo management, backup and recovery concepts, and the Oracle memory architecture. I also kept a handwritten study guide for areas I kept getting wrong — old school but it worked.

For anyone currently prepping, how long did you study? I clocked roughly 80 hours total across both attempts. Curious if that's typical or if I just needed to grind harder the first time around.

Congrats! Two attempts is super common for this one, don't let anyone make you feel bad about it. I passed on my first try but barely — 72%. The memory architecture section wrecked me too. My biggest exam tip: don't ignore the SQL tuning and optimizer stuff. Looked minor in the syllabus but I got hit with like 6-7 questions on it. Practice tests were honestly the only thing that prepared me for how Oracle phrases their trick questions.

I'm currently studying for 1Z0-082 and this thread is really helpful. Quick question — did you use the official Oracle University materials at all, or just third-party practice tests and docs? I've been going back and forth on whether to pay for the official course. My exam's booked for six weeks out and I'm scoring around 65% on my mocks right now, which is stressing me out a bit.

Six weeks is plenty if you're already hitting 65% on mocks. Focus hard on the performance tuning and database architecture chapters — those two alone probably make up a quarter of the exam. And simulate timed conditions when you practice. The 150-minute clock sneaks up on you.
