Finally passed 1Z0-082 after failing twice — here's what actually worked

So I just got my Oracle Database Administration I certification and I'm still kind of in shock. I failed this thing twice before finally passing last week with an 82%. The first two attempts I was just reading the official docs and watching YouTube videos, and honestly that wasn't cutting it. The SQL tuning and performance sections destroyed me both times.

What finally made the difference was switching to a proper 1Z0 082 practice test routine. I started doing timed mock exams every single day for the last three weeks of my prep — like, 20-30 questions minimum before work each morning. The exam format threw me off early on because the wording is deliberately tricky, especially around RMAN backup strategies and undo management. Drilling practice questions got me used to how Oracle phrases things.

I also found a solid study guide that broke down the multitenant architecture topics, which were way more heavily tested than I expected. Spent about 90 hours total across four months. If anyone's in the middle of prep or recovering from a failed attempt, happy to share more specifics about which topics to prioritize.

Congrats! I'm scheduled for mine in six weeks and the performance tuning stuff is already freaking me out. Quick question — were there a lot of scenario-based questions, like "the DBA does X, what happens next"? That's the format I struggle with most. I've been doing maybe 40 hours of prep so far and I feel like I'm only halfway through the material.

The multitenant stuff was brutal for me too. I passed on my second attempt and honestly the biggest exam tip I can give is don't skip the CDB/PDB architecture questions even if they feel abstract — they show up constantly. I probably saw 8-10 questions just on pluggable database management. Also, RMAN recovery scenarios. Know those cold.

82% on a retake after two fails is honestly impressive. That takes some guts to keep going. The undo and redo concepts trip up almost everyone. You'll be surprised how much easier the next Oracle cert feels after you've got this one under your belt.
