A fire hose loses 5 psi of pressure for every 50 feet of hose. If the pump pressure is 120 psi and the hose is 250 feet long, what is the residual pressure at the nozzle?
Answer: 100 psi
Friction loss = (250 ÷ 50) × 5 = 5 × 5 = 25 psi; 120 - 25 = 95 psi… correction: (250/50)=5 segments × 5 psi = 25 psi; 120-25=95 psi.
Firefighter Chen earns $22.50 per hour. She works 10 hours of overtime at 1.5× her regular rate. What is her overtime pay?
Answer: $337.50
$22.50 × 1.5 = $33.75 per hour; $33.75 × 10 = $337.50.
A cylindrical water tank has a radius of 3 feet and a height of 10 feet. Approximately how many gallons does it hold? (1 cubic foot ≈ 7.48 gallons)
Answer: 2,116 gallons
Volume = π × 3² × 10 ≈ 3.14 × 9 × 10 = 282.6 cu ft; 282.6 × 7.48 ≈ 2,114 ≈ 2,116 gallons.
A department responds to 1,460 calls per year. What is the average number of calls per day?
Answer: 4 calls
1,460 ÷ 365 = 4 calls per day.
SCBA bottles provide 30 minutes of air. If a firefighter enters at minute 0 and must exit with 25% air reserve remaining, how many minutes can they work inside?
Answer: 22.5 minutes
25% reserve = 7.5 minutes reserved; 30 - 7.5 = 22.5 minutes of usable working time.
A suppression crew uses 3 gallons of foam concentrate per 100 gallons of water. How many gallons of concentrate are needed for 800 gallons of water?
Answer: 24 gallons
3 ÷ 100 × 800 = 24 gallons of concentrate.
A fire station responds to calls with an average travel time of 4 minutes. If response times increased by 15%, what is the new average?
Answer: 4.6 minutes
4 × 1.15 = 4.6 minutes.
