What the F80 Exam Covers
NYC Fire Code and High-Rise Requirements
High-rise buildings in New York City — those over 75 feet in height — are subject to specific provisions of the NYC Fire Code. The F80 exam tests your understanding of these provisions, including mandatory Fire Safety Director staffing, recordkeeping obligations, and the required components of a building fire safety plan. You must know the difference between a fire safety plan and an emergency action plan and when each applies.
Fire Safety Director Duties
As Fire Safety Director, you are responsible for the overall fire safety program in your building. Exam questions cover your duties during a fire alarm, your authority to direct building staff and fire wardens, your communication protocol with FDNY units responding to your building, and your obligation to conduct and document fire drills at the required frequency for each occupancy group.
Building Systems Knowledge
The F80 exam includes questions on automatic sprinkler systems, Class I and Class II standpipe systems, fire alarm system components (initiating devices, notification appliances, control panels), and smoke control systems including pressurization and exhaust fans. You do not need to be an engineer, but you must understand how each system operates and what to do if one activates or malfunctions.
Emergency Procedures and Occupant Evacuation
You must know elevator recall procedures (Phase I and Phase II), how to execute a staged evacuation or full building evacuation, fire warden roles on each floor, communication with building occupants during emergencies, and post-emergency reporting requirements including notifying FDNY and building management and completing required incident documentation.
