When a potential fire is detected during post-work monitoring, the logbook must capture: exact time and location of discovery, the nature of the observation, all actions taken (alarm activation, 911 call, evacuation), FDNY response details, and the final resolution.

Only the Fireguard on duty is authorized to make entries in the logbook. In some cases, a direct supervisor or an FDNY representative may also make an entry, but general building staff are not permitted to do so.

Fire guards must meet FDNY at the fire command station, provide all available information about the emergency, and assist as directed by the incident commander.

FDNY requires an impairment report to be submitted to the local fire prevention bureau when a sprinkler or fire alarm system is taken out of service. The specific form and process follow FDNY Chapter 9 procedures.

If a designated evacuation route is blocked by fire, smoke, or debris, it is critical not to attempt to use it, as this would put your life at severe risk. Instead, you must immediately seek an alternative safe exit route and continue with the evacuation. Building occupants should be familiar with multiple escape routes from their location to ensure they have options in an emergency.

A detailed logbook is a legal requirement for a fire watch. The Fire Guard must record the times they begin and end their patrols, the areas they visited, and any unsafe conditions or incidents they discover.
