What colour is the coolant low-level warning light typically?
Answer: Red or amber
The coolant warning light is typically red or amber. If it illuminates while driving, you should stop safely and allow the engine to cool before checking the coolant level. Never remove the cap while the engine is hot.
Why should you not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot?
Answer: Pressurised hot coolant can scald you severely
The cooling system is pressurised when hot. Removing the cap releases this pressure suddenly, causing boiling coolant to spray out and potentially causing severe scalding burns.
What is the purpose of the vehicle's power steering fluid?
Answer: To make steering easier by providing hydraulic assistance
Power steering fluid provides hydraulic pressure to assist steering. If the level drops, steering becomes much heavier and more difficult, especially at low speeds.
How can you tell if your vehicle's indicators are flashing at the correct rate?
Answer: They should flash at a steady, regular rate — a rapid flash may indicate a blown bulb
Indicators should flash at a steady rate. If they flash faster than normal (hyper-flash), it usually means one of the indicator bulbs has blown and needs replacing.
What must be displayed on the rear of a vehicle towing a trailer or caravan?
Answer: A duplicate number plate showing the towing vehicle's registration
A trailer or caravan must display a number plate showing the registration of the towing vehicle. This is a legal requirement as the towing vehicle's plate is obscured.
What should you do if you notice your steering feels heavier than usual?
Answer: Check the power steering fluid and have the system inspected
Heavy steering can indicate low power steering fluid, a failing power steering pump, or other steering faults. This is a safety issue that should be investigated promptly.
