  1. When approaching a pedestrian crossing with a flashing amber light, what should you do?

Answer: Give way to any pedestrians still on the crossing, then proceed if clear

A flashing amber light at a pelican crossing means you must give way to any pedestrians still on the crossing. If the crossing is clear, you may proceed with caution. This phase replaces the red light at pelican crossings.

  2. What is the rule about parking near a junction?

Answer: You must not park within 10 metres of a junction

You must not park within 10 metres (about 32 feet) of a junction, unless in an authorised parking space. Parking near a junction reduces visibility for other drivers and increases the risk of accidents.

  3. Red route markings (red lines on the road) indicate what?

Answer: No stopping, waiting, or parking at any time on double red lines

Double red lines mean no stopping at any time for any reason (except in a medical emergency). Single red lines prohibit stopping during times shown on signs. Red routes are mainly found in London and are strictly enforced with cameras and traffic wardens.

  4. When should you use hazard warning lights while driving?

Answer: When on a motorway or unrestricted dual carriageway to warn traffic behind of a hazard ahead

You may use hazard warning lights while driving on a motorway or unrestricted dual carriageway to warn drivers behind you of a hazard or obstruction ahead, such as sudden slow-moving traffic. Otherwise, hazard lights should only be used when stationary.

  5. What is the minimum age for a child to sit in the front seat of a car without a child seat?

Answer: 12 years old or 135 cm tall

Children must use an appropriate child car seat until they are 12 years old or 135 cm (4 ft 5 in) tall, whichever comes first. After that, they must wear an adult seatbelt. Children under 3 must always use a child seat.

  6. What lane should you normally use on a three-lane dual carriageway or motorway?

Answer: The left-hand lane unless overtaking

You should normally drive in the left-hand lane (lane 1). The middle and right-hand lanes are for overtaking. After overtaking, you should move back to the left when it is safe. 'Middle-lane hogging' is an offence under careless driving laws.
