What DANB Certification Means for Dental Assistants
DANB, the Dental Assisting National Board, is the nationally recognized certification agency for dental assistants in the United States, recognized by the American Dental Association. Founded in 1948, DANB administers credentialing exams that measure the knowledge and skills required for safe, competent practice in a dental office. The flagship credential is the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), which requires passing three component exams: Radiation Health and Safety (RHS), Infection Control (ICE), and General Chairside Assisting (GC). Other DANB certifications include the Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA), Certified Preventive Functions Dental Assistant (CPFDA), Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant (CRFDA), and the National Entry Level Dental Assistant (NELDA). Many states use DANB exams to meet licensure, registration, or expanded function requirements, making the credential directly tied to legal scope of practice in dental offices across the country.
DANB Exam Structure, Eligibility, and Scoring
The CDA exam contains 320 multiple-choice questions total across its three components: 100 questions on General Chairside, 100 on Radiation Health and Safety, and 120 on Infection Control. Candidates have 75 minutes for GC, 75 minutes for RHS, and 75 minutes for ICE, and the exams are delivered year-round at Pearson VUE test centers. To qualify for the CDA, candidates must meet one of several eligibility pathways, including graduation from a CODA-accredited dental assisting or dental hygiene program, or high school graduation plus a minimum of 3,500 hours of approved work experience accumulated over two to four years. DANB uses scaled scoring from 100 to 900, with 400 required to pass each component. Current CCHS and BLS certification from a DANB-accepted provider is also required before applying.
