The Certified Telehealth Practitioner (CTP) credential comes from the National Certification Board for Behavioral Health Professionals (NCBBHP). What the CTP is and how it works

According to National Certification Board for Behavioral Health Professionals, “CTP – Certified Telehealth Practitioner 50 70% 2 hours”^[1]

The CTP is the telehealth credential offered by the National Certification Board for Behavioral Health Professionals (NCBBHP). It shows that a practitioner understands how to deliver care safely and effectively at a distance.

How the exam is delivered. NCBBHP offers a remote proctoring option, so you can take the exam online with a live proctor. Before you book, check the official exam information page for the computer, ID and room requirements.

Format and scoring.

• 50 multiple-choice items
• 2 hours to finish
• Passing score: 70%
• You see an unofficial score as soon as you finish. Official scores are processed weekly.

Keeping the credential. The CTP fee is due every 24 months, on or before your expiration date, so plan your renewal around that date.

Worked examples: how to reason through CTP questions

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: Which federal resource should a telehealth administrator consult when seeking funding to expand services to underserved rural communities?

1. HRSA Telehealth Resource Centers
2. The American Telemedicine Association consumer portal
3. The IRS small business tax guide
4. Local hospital gift shop revenue reports

Answer: A. HRSA Telehealth Resource Centers

Explanation:

A is correct. HRSA (the Health Resources and Services Administration) is the federal agency behind telehealth grant programs for rural and underserved areas. It also funds the Telehealth Resource Centers, which give free technical assistance and help organizations find and plan for funding opportunities.

• B is wrong because the American Telemedicine Association is a professional association, not a federal agency. A consumer portal is also aimed at patients, not at organizations looking for grants.

To best assess for pitting edema during this virtual clinical assessment, what should the practitioner instruct the patient to do?

1. Elevate his legs and see if the swelling decreases.
2. Press firmly on his shin for five seconds, remove his finger, and describe any indentation.
3. Take a picture of his ankles and send it through the secure patient portal.
4. Walk across the room to assess for gait instability caused by the swelling.

Answer: B. Press firmly on his shin for five seconds, remove his finger, and describe any indentation.

Explanation:

B is correct. Pitting edema means a dent stays in the skin after pressure is released. Ask the patient to press firmly on his shin for five seconds, let go and describe the dent. This copies the in-person test and gives you a finding you can grade and track over video.

• A is wrong because elevation may reduce swelling but tells you nothing about whether it pits.
• C is wrong because a still photo can show swelling but cannot show how the skin responds to pressure.
• D is wrong because walking tests gait and fall risk, not edema. It could also be unsafe for a patient who is short of breath.

Rule to remember: when you cannot touch the patient, coach them through the physical maneuver and have them report or show the result on camera.

Example 3

Question: What affects platform usability?

1. TV size
2. Internet ad speed
3. Interface and compatibility
4. Room temperature

Answer: C. Interface and compatibility

Explanation:

C is correct. Usability is how easily people can use the platform. It depends on a clear, intuitive interface and on compatibility with the devices, operating systems and browsers that patients and clinicians already use. Together these decide whether a session starts smoothly or stalls on technical problems.

• A is wrong because telehealth runs on phones, tablets and computers. Screen size belongs to the user's device, not to the platform.
• B is wrong because "ad speed" is not a usability factor. Connection bandwidth does affect call quality, but that is a network issue, not platform design.
• D is wrong because room temperature affects comfort, not the software.

Rule to remember: usability belongs to the platform itself: its interface design and how well it works across devices and systems.

How to use these practice tests

Start with the official CTP page and exam information page so you know the current eligibility rules, fees and remote proctoring requirements. We could not verify a published content outline, so use our topic sets to find your weak areas instead of guessing how the exam is weighted.

• Get a baseline. Take the Start Practice Test without studying first, and note which topics you miss.
• Close gaps by topic. Work through the matching sets, such as Legal, Ethical & Regulatory Compliance, Digital Privacy and Security, Remote Crisis Management and Virtual Clinical Assessments. Read every explanation, including the ones for questions you got right.
• Write down rules, not answers. For every question you miss, write the general principle in a sentence. Review that list instead of memorizing questions.
• Do a timed run. Close to test day, mix questions from several sets into a 50-item block and give yourself 2 hours. Aim well above 70% so a harder exam form still leaves you some margin.
• Rehearse your setup. Before exam day, check your computer, camera, connection and room against the proctoring rules.
