CTBS - Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills Reading Comprehension Questions and Answers — Questions and Answers
Question 1: Read the following passage and answer the question.
The giant panda, a bear native to south-central China, is characterized by its bold black-and-white coat and rotund body. Despite its classification in the order Carnivora, the panda's diet is over 99% bamboo. In the wild, pandas will occasionally eat other grasses, wild tubers, or even meat in the form of birds, rodents, or carrion. In captivity, they may receive honey, eggs, fish, yams, and specially formulated biscuits. The giant panda lives in a few mountain ranges in central China, mainly in Sichuan province, but also in neighboring Shaanxi and Gansu. As a result of farming, deforestation, and other development, the giant panda has been driven out of the lowland areas where it once lived.
What is the main idea of this passage?
- The giant panda's diet is varied and adaptable.
- The giant panda is an endangered species due to habitat loss.
- The passage provides a general overview of the giant panda, including its appearance, diet, and habitat. (Correct answer)
- Giant pandas are exclusively found in the Sichuan province of China.
Correct answer: The passage provides a general overview of the giant panda, including its appearance, diet, and habitat.
The passage discusses multiple aspects of the giant panda: its appearance ('black-and-white coat'), its primary and occasional diet ('over 99% bamboo' but also other foods), and its geographical location and habitat challenges ('mountain ranges in central China' and 'driven out of the lowland areas'). Therefore, the main idea is a general overview. The other options are too specific or are not fully supported by the text.
Question 2: Read the following paragraph and answer the question.
Echolocation is a fascinating biological sonar used by several animal species, including bats, dolphins, and some shrews. These animals emit calls out to the environment and listen to the echoes of those calls that return from various objects near them. They use the echoes to locate and identify the objects. The time it takes for the echo to return helps the animal determine how far away the object is. The direction from which the echo comes tells the animal the object's location. By interpreting these echoes, an animal can form a 'sound map' of its surroundings, allowing it to navigate and hunt in complete darkness.
Based on the passage, which of the following can be inferred about animals that use echolocation?
- They are all nocturnal animals that are active only at night.
- They have superior hearing capabilities compared to animals that do not use echolocation.
- They can function effectively in environments with little to no light. (Correct answer)
- They primarily live in caves and deep ocean environments.
Correct answer: They can function effectively in environments with little to no light.
The passage explicitly states that echolocation allows an animal to 'navigate and hunt in complete darkness.' This directly supports the inference that these animals can function effectively in low-light or no-light conditions. While some may be nocturnal (like bats), the passage doesn't state they all are. Superior hearing is implied but not explicitly stated as a comparison. Their habitats are not limited to caves and oceans.
Question 3: A city ordinance states: 'All public parks shall be closed to the public between the hours of 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. No individual shall enter, remain, or congregate in any public park during these hours. This rule does not apply to city employees performing official duties or to individuals who have obtained a special permit from the Parks Department for a nighttime event.'
On a Tuesday at 11:00 PM, a group of friends is having a picnic in a public park. They do not have a permit. Which of the following is true according to the ordinance?
- The group is allowed to be in the park because picnics are a permitted activity.
- The group is in violation of the ordinance. (Correct answer)
- The ordinance only applies on weekends, so the group is not in violation.
- Only the park rangers are allowed in the park at this time.
Correct answer: The group is in violation of the ordinance.
The ordinance clearly states that parks are closed from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. The group is in the park at 11:00 PM without a special permit. Therefore, they are in violation of the rule against entering, remaining, or congregating in the park during closing hours.
Question 4: Read the sentence: 'The politician's speech was filled with equivocal statements, leaving the audience unsure of his true stance on the critical issue.'
In the context of this sentence, what is the best definition for the word 'equivocal'?
- Passionate and inspiring
- Clear and direct
- Angry and confrontational
- Ambiguous and open to more than one interpretation (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Ambiguous and open to more than one interpretation
The key context clue is that the audience was 'unsure of his true stance.' This indicates that the statements were not clear. 'Ambiguous and open to more than one interpretation' is the only option that fits this context, as it explains why the audience would be left feeling uncertain.
Question 5: Read the passage below.
The process of photosynthesis is fundamental to life on Earth. In this process, green plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy into chemical energy. They use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create their own food in the form of glucose (sugar). A crucial byproduct of this process is oxygen, which is released into the atmosphere. This oxygen is what most living organisms, including humans, need to breathe. Thus, not only does photosynthesis provide the energy base for most of the world's ecosystems, but it also supplies the oxygen we depend on.
What is the author's primary purpose in writing this passage?
- To persuade readers to plant more trees.
- To entertain readers with a story about plants.
- To inform readers about the process and importance of photosynthesis. (Correct answer)
- To argue that photosynthesis is the only important biological process.
Correct answer: To inform readers about the process and importance of photosynthesis.
The passage explains what photosynthesis is, what it uses, what it produces, and why it is important for life. The tone is objective and factual. This indicates the primary purpose is to inform the reader about the topic.
Question 6: Memo to Employees:
Effective next Monday, the east entrance to the building will be closed for renovations. All employees and visitors must use the west entrance. The project is expected to last for approximately two weeks. During this time, please allow for extra time when arriving, as there may be delays. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your cooperation.
Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the memo?
- The specific date the project will end. (Correct answer)
- Which entrance will be closed.
- The reason for the entrance closure.
- Who is required to use the alternate entrance.
Correct answer: The specific date the project will end.
The memo states the project will last 'for approximately two weeks,' which is an estimated duration, not a specific end date. It explicitly mentions the east entrance is closed, the closure is for renovations, and that all employees and visitors must use the west entrance.
