Water is a critical ingredient in Scotch whisky production, influencing its character from start to finish. It is used extensively during the mashing process to extract sugars from the malted barley and is also added after distillation and aging to dilute the spirit to its bottling strength. The mineral content and purity of the local water source can significantly impact the final flavor profile.

By law, Scotch whisky must have a minimum alcohol by volume (ABV) of 40% when bottled. This regulation ensures a consistent strength and quality standard for the spirit. Whiskies are often distilled to a higher ABV and then diluted with water before bottling to reach this legal minimum or a desired strength.

Cask strength means the whisky is bottled at the natural alcohol level straight from the barrel, without water being added to reduce the strength.
