What Is the ServiceNow CSA Exam?
The ServiceNow CSA (Certified System Administrator) exam is the foundational certification for ServiceNow professionals. It validates that you can configure and manage a ServiceNow instance — the core admin tasks that organizations rely on for platform operation. If you're working in ITSM, IT operations, or ServiceNow development, this credential is your starting point.
ServiceNow is one of the most widely deployed enterprise IT service management platforms in the world. Demand for certified admins is consistently high, and the CSA is the prerequisite for almost every other ServiceNow certification path. Passing it opens doors to the Certified Application Developer (CAD), Certified Implementation Specialist (CIS), and other advanced credentials.
CSA Exam Format and Structure
The ServiceNow CSA exam is a 60-question multiple-choice exam with a 90-minute time limit. The passing score is 70% — meaning you need to answer 42 out of 60 questions correctly.
Questions are distributed across the following domain areas:
- User Interface and Navigation — Lists, forms, service portal, global search, UI16 interface basics
- Collaboration — Live feed, task management, activity streams, connect chat
- Self-Service and Process Automation — Service catalog, request management, flow designer, workflows
- Database Administration — Tables, fields, relationships, import sets, data dictionary
- Customization — Themes, homepage, UI policies, client scripts, business rules
- Introduction to Development and Implementation — Application menus, modules, tables, basic scripting
Database administration and process automation tend to be the most question-heavy areas. If you're splitting your study time, weight those heavier.
How to Register for the CSA Exam
ServiceNow exams are administered through Pearson VUE — either in person at a testing center or online with a remote proctor. To register:
- Log in to your ServiceNow Community profile (or create one)
- Visit the ServiceNow Certification website and select the CSA exam
- Schedule through Pearson VUE — choose in-person or online proctored
- Pay the exam fee (approximately $300 USD at time of writing)
Online proctored testing is available, so you can take the exam from home if you have a reliable computer, webcam, and private space. The remote proctor will monitor your session.

CSA Exam Prerequisites and Recommended Experience
ServiceNow doesn't publish strict formal prerequisites for the CSA exam — technically you can register without specific experience. But realistically, trying to pass without hands-on ServiceNow experience is very difficult.
ServiceNow recommends the following before attempting the CSA:
- Completion of the ServiceNow Fundamentals on-demand training course (available free through ServiceNow Now Learning)
- 3–6 months of hands-on ServiceNow platform experience
- Familiarity with ITSM concepts (incident, change, problem, request management)
The exam tests application of knowledge — not just recall. Scenarios require you to understand how configuration choices affect platform behavior. If you've only read documentation without ever navigating an actual ServiceNow instance, you'll struggle with these questions.
Key Study Areas for the CSA
Here's where to focus your prep based on what consistently appears on the exam:
Tables and the Data Dictionary
ServiceNow is a database platform at its core. You need to understand how tables extend each other, what field types exist, how relationships work (reference fields, M2M tables), and how to use the data dictionary to manage schema. Database administration questions are dense and require real platform familiarity.
Business Rules, Client Scripts, and UI Policies
These three configuration tools control platform behavior and are heavily tested. Know the difference: business rules run server-side, client scripts run in the browser, and UI policies control form behavior declaratively (without scripting). The exam loves questions that test whether you'd use one vs. another in a given scenario.
Access Control Lists (ACLs)
Security model questions are common. Understand how ACLs evaluate, the role hierarchy, and what happens when ACLs conflict or are absent. Knowing when to use roles vs. groups vs. ACLs is critical.
Service Catalog and Workflows/Flow Designer
ServiceNow's automation capabilities are core admin knowledge. Understand catalog items, record producers, order guides, and how flow designer connects them. Workflow (the legacy tool) still appears on exams alongside Flow Designer.
Import Sets and Transform Maps
Data ingestion is a common admin task. Know how import sets work, what transform maps do, and the sequence of events during a data import. The coalesce field concept — used for deduplication during transforms — shows up on the exam.
Study Resources That Actually Help
The most effective study path combines official and unofficial resources:
- ServiceNow Fundamentals course — Free through Now Learning. Do this first. It's the official curriculum and is directly aligned to the exam.
- Personal Developer Instance (PDI) — ServiceNow provides free personal developer instances to registered users. Hands-on practice in your own instance is irreplaceable for admin tasks.
- ServiceNow documentation (docs.servicenow.com) — The platform docs are good. When studying a topic, read the docs version alongside your course notes.
- Practice exams — Working through practice questions is essential for familiarizing yourself with question style and identifying content gaps before the real test.
The exam version changes with each ServiceNow release (twice per year). Make sure your study materials match the current release. ServiceNow publishes the exam blueprint — the domain weights and topic list — on the certification site.
Practice CSA Questions Before You Schedule
The CSA exam rewards systematic preparation. Going in without working through practice questions is a common and avoidable mistake — the question style is specific to ServiceNow's way of presenting scenarios, and getting comfortable with it before the real exam matters.
Our free CSA practice tests cover all the major domain areas: user interface and navigation, database administration, self-service and process automation, and more. Timed, scored, with explanations that help you understand the platform logic behind each answer.
Work through a set in each domain. See where you're confident and where you're guessing. Use those results to focus your remaining study time in your PDI. Then schedule your exam when you're consistently hitting 75%+ on practice tests under timed conditions.
