What Is on the CRST Exam?

The CRST examination covers five core OHS domains. Here is a breakdown of what to expect in each area.

Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

Candidates must understand physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial hazard types; risk assessment matrices; and job hazard analysis (JHA). WHMIS 2015 — the GHS-aligned system covering SDS format, pictograms, and signal words (Danger vs. Warning) — is heavily tested. Questions also cover the hierarchy of controls, workplace inspection procedures, and incident investigation methods including root cause analysis, 5-Whys, and fault tree analysis.

OHS Legislation

The exam covers the Canada Labour Code Part II (federal jurisdiction) and provincial OH&S Acts, including the rights and duties of employers, supervisors, and workers. The internal responsibility system (IRS), worker rights (refuse unsafe work, participate in OHS, be informed), Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSC), OHS orders, and administrative monetary penalties are all tested areas.

Safety Management Systems

Candidates are expected to know SMS frameworks including ISO 45001, CSA Z1000-14, and ANSI Z10. The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, policy and objective setting, implementation, evaluation, review, management commitment, worker participation, competency requirements, and contractor management are all within scope.

Occupational Hygiene Fundamentals

Exposure standards including OELs, TLV, TWA, STEL, and ceiling values are tested. The domain also covers noise (dB(A) limits, audiometric testing, hearing conservation programs), workplace sampling methods (air sampling, wipe sampling), biological monitoring, and basics of ionizing vs. non-ionizing radiation.

Emergency Preparedness

Topics include emergency response plan components (roles, notification, evacuation, assembly points), first aid requirements under provincial regulations, confined space entry procedures (atmospheric testing, permit systems, attendant role), fire protection basics (fire classes, extinguisher selection, sprinkler systems), and WHMIS spill response protocols.
