What STCW Certification Actually Requires

The STCW Convention (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) sets the baseline safety training every seafarer must hold before working on an internationally trading vessel. This lesson walks through the four mandatory Basic Safety Training components — personal survival techniques, fire prevention and firefighting, elementary first aid, and personal safety and social responsibility — and how they map onto the certification exam you'll sit.

You'll also learn the difference between Basic Safety Training (BST) and advanced or specialized STCW endorsements, so you know exactly which certificate you're working toward and why the requirements exist.
