CBI Exam at a Glance

What the CBI is and how it works

According to International Code Council, “A score of 75 is not a percentage . It is a scaled score that represents passing on the ICC Standardized Scale.”^[2]

The International Code Council (ICC) is the official body behind this credential. Its exams test whether you can apply building codes and inspection practice. They are not a memory test of page numbers. The Commercial Building Inspector (B2) exam is the clearest published example. It has 80 multiple-choice questions and is open book, so knowing where to look in the code is as useful as recalling a rule.

ICC offers many exams online through ICC PRONTO from any secure location, or at an in-person test center. For B2, the exam fee is $320 per exam, and a purchase is valid for 365 days. Fees and exam formats can differ between exams, so check the official page for the exact exam you plan to sit.

Results use a scaled score, and the passing score is 75. That is not a percentage. It is a scaled score on the ICC Standardized Scale, so do not read it as 75 percent of questions correct.

If you do not pass, you pay the full exam fee at every attempt. ICC allows up to 6 attempts in a rolling 6 months. ICC credentials are valid for 3 years and must be renewed on or before the expiration date.

Eligibility, jurisdiction requirements and which code edition applies can vary by state or employer. Confirm those details with the ICC website and your local building department before you book.

Worked examples: how to reason through CBI questions

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: What is a plumbing vent and why is it necessary?

1. A pipe extending to the roof that allows air into the drainage system to maintain proper flow and prevent siphoning of traps

Explanation:

Option A is correct. A vent is a pipe that reaches the roof and lets air into the drainage system. Air keeps pressure balanced so waste flows freely, and it stops the suction that would pull water out of traps. A trap that keeps its water seals out sewer gas.

Option B describes a bathroom fan, which moves room air and has no connection to the drainage piping. Option C, an air conditioning duct, belongs to the heating and cooling system. Option D, a window, only ventilates the room.

The rule to remember: the word vent is used for several different things, so match it to the system in the question. In plumbing, a vent protects trap seals and keeps drains flowing.

Example 2

Question: Radon gas in homes primarily originates from the natural decay of which element in soil and rock?

1. Sulfur
2. Uranium
3. Carbon
4. Lead

Answer: B. Uranium

Explanation:

Option B, uranium, is correct. Radon is a radioactive gas produced when uranium in soil and rock decays. It can move up through the ground and enter a building through cracks and openings in the foundation.

Option A, sulfur, is not radioactive and does not decay into radon. Option C, carbon, is common in many materials but is not the source of this gas. Option D, lead, is a heavy metal that appears at the end of some decay chains rather than as a source of radon.

The rule to remember: radon comes from the ground beneath a building, so the usual inspection concern is the foundation and how soil gas can enter.

Example 3

Question: Solid single-strand aluminum branch-circuit wiring installed in many homes from about 1965–1973 is primarily a concern because of what?

1. It cannot carry 15-amp loads
2. Its connections are prone to overheating and fire
3. It is incompatible with GFCI devices
4. It corrodes copper water pipes

Answer: B. Its connections are prone to overheating and fire

Explanation:

Option B is correct. Solid single-strand aluminum wiring expands and contracts more than copper, and it oxidizes and creeps at terminals. Connections then loosen, heat up and can start a fire.

Option A is wrong because the question is about connection reliability, not about whether the wire can carry a 15-amp load. Option C is wrong because GFCI devices are not the issue with this wiring. Option D is wrong because the wiring does not corrode copper water pipes.

The rule to remember: with older aluminum branch circuits, look hard at the terminals and devices, since the connections are where heating and failure occur.

How to use these practice tests

Start with the official material. Read the exam content outline for the exam you plan to sit, and note which areas carry the most weight. Then work through the practice sets in the table above, starting with the areas that feel weakest.

Take a set untimed at the start. After each question, read the explanation even when you answered correctly, and write down the reason the right option is right. When you miss a question, find the matching section in the code book and read the surrounding text, not just the line that answers it.

Because the B2 exam is open book, practise looking things up. Tab your code books, learn how the index and table of contents are organised, and time yourself finding a requirement. A set of questions is more useful when you also practise locating the answer.

Later, mix sets together so you are not relying on knowing the topic in advance. Keep a short list of missed topics and revisit it before each new session. In the final days, review that list and the official outline rather than starting new material. Remember that our questions are written by us and are practice only, not real exam questions.
