CDA Online 2026: Online Courses, Classes & Certification Programs

Yes — the CDA can be earned with fully online training. The Council for Professional Recognition (headquartered in CDA Council Washington DC) officially recognizes online coursework, self-study, and blended programs as valid toward the 120-hour training requirement. As long as your program covers all 8 required content areas and provides a certificate of completion, it qualifies.

What cannot be done online is your 480 hours of professional experience working directly with children — that must be completed in a licensed childcare setting. However, the 120-hour education requirement, the written resource collection, and the CDA exam registration can all be handled online through the Council's MyCouncil® portal.

Your childcare training hours must be distributed across all 8 content areas — no single area can constitute 100% of your training. Online programs typically break the 120 hours into modules aligned to each subject. When you complete a module, you receive a digital certificate of completion that you upload to your Professional Portfolio via MyCouncil®.

Important rules for online training hours:

• No single provider cap — you can mix hours from multiple online providers as long as all 8 areas are covered
• Clock hours, not credit hours — 1 semester credit ≈ 10 clock hours for CDA purposes

Avoid programs that offer completion certificates only as a group (e.g., "120 hours total") without subject-area breakdowns, as the Council may reject documentation that doesn't map to specific areas.
