The Certified Chimney Sweep (CCS) credential from the Chimney Safety Institute of America is for chimney professionals who want a recognised certification. To earn it, you complete a CCS review and pass the CCS exam. This page explains how the exam works, using only facts from CSIA's own pages. What the CCS is and how it works

According to Chimney Safety Institute of America, “A one-hour, 100-question closed-book exam based on the Chimney & Venting Essentials manual and the NFPA 211.”^[1]

The Certified Chimney Sweep (CCS) credential is run by the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA). To become certified, you must complete a CCS review and pass the CCS exam. CSIA lists the review at $330 in person or $345 virtual.

The CSIA exam guide describes the exam this way:

• Closed-book section: 100 questions based on the Chimney & Venting Essentials manual and NFPA 211.
• Open-book section: a 90-minute exam on the International Residential Code (IRC).

The exam guide says your score appears right away. We have not verified CSIA's retake policy, so check the exam guide or contact CSIA before you plan a second attempt.

Certification runs on a 3-year cycle. An annual payment of $249 is due for the first two years of the cycle. To renew, you either retest or earn 48 CEUs across CSIA's listed categories and apply to renew with those CEUs. Fees, delivery options and policies can change, so confirm the current details on csia.org before you register. Local permit and code rules for chimney work vary by jurisdiction and are separate from the certification.

Worked examples: how to reason through CCS questions

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: What is the function of the smoke shelf in a masonry fireplace?

1. To hold the damper assembly in place
2. To catch falling debris and rain and prevent downdrafts from pushing smoke into the room
3. To support the firebox floor
4. To direct combustion air to the fire

Answer: B. To catch falling debris and rain and prevent downdrafts from pushing smoke into the room

Explanation:

B is correct. The smoke shelf is the ledge behind the damper at the bottom of the smoke chamber. It catches debris and rain that fall down the flue. It also turns cold downdrafts back upward so they mix with the rising hot gases instead of pushing smoke into the room.

• A is wrong: the damper sits in the throat and is held by its own frame, not by the shelf.
• C is wrong: the firebox floor rests on the hearth and the structure under it.
• D is wrong: combustion air comes in through the firebox opening or an outside air supply, not the shelf.

Rule to remember: the smoke shelf deals with what comes down the flue, not with what feeds the fire.

Example 2

Question: What is the correct name for the sloped, angled sides of the smoke chamber?

1. Corbels or haunches that step the walls inward toward the flue
2. Smoke shelves
3. Firebacks
4. Firebox jambs

Explanation:

A is correct. Corbels, also called haunches, are the sloped side walls of the smoke chamber. They step the wide throat area inward toward the smaller flue.

• B is wrong: the smoke shelf is the ledge at the bottom of the smoke chamber behind the damper, not its sloped sides.
• C is wrong: a fireback is a plate or lining on the back wall of the firebox.
• D is wrong: jambs are the vertical side walls of the firebox opening, below the throat.

Rule to remember: walls above the damper that slope inward belong to the smoke chamber, and walls below it belong to the firebox. On the job, rough or badly sloped corbelling is worth noting because it can affect draft and where creosote builds up.

Example 3

Question: At a minimum, a Level 1 inspection must evaluate the chimney's:

1. Concealed portions behind finished walls
2. Structural integrity of the attic framing around the chase
3. Readily accessible and visible portions of the exterior and interior
4. Underground foundation footings

Answer: C. Readily accessible and visible portions of the exterior and interior

Explanation:

C is correct. A Level 1 inspection is the basic inspection, used when the system and how it is used have not changed. It covers the readily accessible, visible parts of the chimney exterior and interior and the accessible parts of the appliance connection.

• A is wrong: concealed areas behind finished walls are outside a basic inspection and need a more involved one.
• B is wrong: attic framing around a chase is not a readily accessible part of the chimney, and checking it needs access a basic inspection does not include.
• D is wrong: underground footings cannot be seen without digging.

Rule to remember: Level 1 covers what you can see and reach without opening up the building.

How to use these practice tests

Start with the official material. Use the Chimney & Venting Essentials manual and NFPA 211 for the closed-book section, and the IRC for the open-book section. Our sets are a way to check what you know, not a replacement for those sources.

1. Find your weak spots first. Take Fireplace Anatomy & Components and CSIA Inspection Level Standards without notes. Write down every term you missed.
2. Work on codes next. Take NFPA Codes & Local Regulations and NFPA 211 & Local Regulations. For each miss, find the matching section in NFPA 211 and read the whole section.
3. Cover the field topics. Rotate through Ventilation & Draft Systems, Flue Liner Types & Installation, Fire Prevention & Creosote Management and Chimney Inspection & Assessment.
4. Practise looking things up. The IRC section is open-book, so time how quickly you can find chimney and fireplace provisions in your copy, and tab the chapters you use most.
5. Review before test day. Retake your weakest sets and read the explanation for each question you get wrong.
