Administrative Competencies

Administrative knowledge makes up a significant share of the exam. You'll need to understand appointment scheduling systems, both manual and electronic, and how to manage patient flow efficiently. Insurance and billing questions focus on the basics — understanding CPT and ICD-10-CM code categories, the CMS-1500 claim form, and how to verify patient insurance eligibility. HIPAA questions are woven throughout the administrative section: the minimum necessary standard, patient authorization requirements, incidental disclosures, and breach notification rules are all fair game.

Pharmacology

The pharmacology domain tests your ability to safely handle and document medications in the medical assisting scope of practice. Know the six routes of medication administration (oral, sublingual, topical, transdermal, inhalation, parenteral) and the specific technique required for each. Drug category questions cover common drug classes — antibiotics, antihypertensives, analgesics, antihistamines, and corticosteroids — along with their primary uses and patient education points.

Dosage calculation questions require comfort with ratio-proportion and dimensional analysis methods. California-specific questions may address which medications medical assistants are permitted to administer under physician supervision versus those requiring a nurse or physician to administer directly.

Anatomy and Physiology

You are expected to understand the body systems most relevant to outpatient medical assisting: the cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, integumentary, gastrointestinal, and urinary systems. Questions often connect anatomy to clinical tasks — for example, knowing the anatomy of the antecubital fossa for venipuncture, or the layers of the skin for injection depth selection.

Patient Communication and Interaction

Effective communication is a core competency. Questions in this area assess your understanding of therapeutic communication techniques, active listening, cultural competency, adapting communication for patients with disabilities or limited English proficiency, and handling difficult patient interactions professionally. Documentation of patient education and patient refusals of care is also tested.

Medical Law, Ethics, and Scope of Practice

CCBMA candidates must understand the legal framework governing medical assisting in California. The exam tests knowledge of the California Business and Professions Code sections that define what medical assistants may and may not do, including the requirement for specific physician authorization before performing any delegated clinical task. Informed consent, the right to refuse treatment, advance directives, mandatory reporting requirements (abuse, communicable diseases), and malpractice concepts such as negligence and standard of care are all covered.

CCBMA vs. AAMA CMA vs. AMT RMA

California has its own certifying board, the CCBMA, which is separate from the national AAMA (American Association of Medical Assistants) that awards the CMA (AAMA) credential and the AMT (American Medical Technologists) that awards the RMA credential. The CCBMA certification is California-state recognized. While content overlaps significantly, the CCBMA exam emphasizes California-specific scope of practice rules and the Business and Professions Code more heavily than the national exams. All three credentials are widely accepted by California employers, but some employers may specify a preference for one over the others.
