The ATB (Ability to Benefit) test is the federally approved pathway for students without a high school diploma or GED to qualify for Title IV federal financial aid — including Pell Grants and federal loans. Under the Higher Education Act Section 484(d), passing an approved ATB test allows eligible students to access financial assistance at qualifying institutions enrolled in career pathway programs.
Downloading our free ATB practice test PDF lets you prepare offline, print a study sheet, and work through arithmetic and writing questions at your own pace. Use it alongside our online ATB practice test to build both speed and accuracy before test day.

What the ATB Test Covers
The most widely administered ATB test today is the ACCUPLACER, developed by College Board. It has two required subtests for ATB purposes — the Next-Generation Arithmetic section and the Next-Generation Writing section. Here's what each covers:
Arithmetic Section
The arithmetic subtest contains 40 questions covering whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages. You'll need to calculate the percentage of a number, handle percentage increase and decrease problems, and work through basic interest calculations. The section also tests operations with signed numbers (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positives and negatives), estimation, and order of operations (PEMDAS). Converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions is a common question type, as is dividing fractions by multiplying by the reciprocal.
Next-Generation Writing Section
The writing subtest has 25 questions focused on grammar, mechanics, and sentence clarity. Expect questions on sentence structure errors (fragments, run-ons, and comma splices), punctuation rules (commas, semicolons, colons, and apostrophes), subject-verb agreement, pronoun reference and antecedent agreement, verb tense consistency, and word choice. You'll also encounter questions on logical ordering of ideas within paragraphs and appropriate use of transitional phrases.
Score Requirements and Institutions
There is no single universal passing score — each institution participating in the ATB program sets its own minimum score requirements for both subtests. Contact the financial aid office at your target school to learn the exact scores you need. Beyond the test, students must be enrolled in an eligible career pathway program at an institution with an approved ATB program to receive Title IV aid.
