  1. If 3(x - 4) = 2x + 1, what is x?

    Answer: 13

    Expanding gives 3x - 12 = 2x + 1, so x = 13.

  2. What is the greatest common factor (GCF) of 36 and 60?

    Answer: 12

The factors of 36 include 1,2,3,4,6,9,12,18,36 and of 60 include 1,2,3,4,5,6,10,12,15,20,30,60; the greatest common factor is 12.

  3. A number is increased by 40% and the result is 84. What was the original number?

    Answer: 60

    If the original number is n, then 1.4n = 84, so n = 60.

  4. Simplify: (2x²)(3x³)

    Answer: 6x⁵

    Multiply the coefficients (2 × 3 = 6) and add the exponents (2 + 3 = 5) to get 6x⁵.

  5. Which of the following is a prime number?

    Answer: 67

67 is prime because it has no divisors other than 1 and itself; 51=3×17, 57=3×19, 63=9×7.

  6. If the ratio of boys to girls in a class is 3:5 and there are 24 boys, how many girls are there?

    Answer: 40

    If 3 parts = 24 boys, then 1 part = 8, so 5 parts = 40 girls.

  7. Solve for y: 2y/3 = 10

    Answer: 15

    Multiply both sides by 3 to get 2y = 30, then divide by 2 to get y = 15.
