What are the four basic tissue types in the human body?
Answer: Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous
The four fundamental tissue types are epithelial (covering/lining), connective (support/connection), muscle (movement), and nervous (communication/control).
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
Answer: To cover body surfaces, line cavities, and form glands
Epithelial tissue covers all body surfaces, lines body cavities and organs, and forms glands. It provides protection, absorption, secretion, and sensation.
What is the largest organ in the human body?
Answer: Skin
The skin is the largest organ, covering approximately 20 square feet in adults and weighing about 8 pounds. It serves as the primary barrier against the environment.
What is the difference between arteries and veins?
Answer: Arteries carry blood away from the heart; veins carry blood toward the heart
Arteries carry blood away from the heart (usually oxygenated) while veins carry blood toward the heart (usually deoxygenated). Arteries have thicker walls to handle higher pressure.
What is homeostasis?
Answer: The body's ability to maintain stable internal conditions
Homeostasis is the body's dynamic process of maintaining stable internal conditions (temperature, pH, blood sugar) despite external changes.
What is the function of red blood cells?
Answer: To transport oxygen from lungs to tissues and CO2 back
Red blood cells (erythrocytes) contain hemoglobin that binds oxygen in the lungs and delivers it to tissues, then carries carbon dioxide back for exhalation.
