American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 8 Practice Test 2025
The American Mathematics Contest 8 2025 (AMC 8) (formerly the American Junior High School Mathematics Examination) for students in grades 8 and below, which began in 1985; the American Mathematics Contest 10 (AMC 10) for students in grades 10 and below, which began in 2000; the American Mathematics Contest 12 (AMC 12) (formerly the American High School Mathematics Examination) for students in grades 12 and below, which began in 1950; and the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) for students in grades 12 and below, which began in 1950. The AMC 10 and 12 were the first contests to use a computerized scoring system. The AMC 8, 10, and 12 have been sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) since 1986.
The exam allows students to apply principles learned in junior high to situations that range in difficulty from easy to difficult and includes a wide range of applications. Many of the problems are intended to challenge pupils and provide problem-solving opportunities beyond what is available in most junior high mathematics programs. Calculators will be outlawed beginning in 2008. Students with high test scores are invited to participate in the AMC 10. AMC 10 and AMC 12 are open to all high school graduates who have taken at least two out of the three approved mathematics courses their state offers. Successful completion of AMC 10 or 12 will not automatically qualify a student for the highest level or AP exams in mathematics.
Some students must sit for the “American Invitational Mathematics Exam” (AIME) as part of their high school diploma requirements. In contrast, others sit for this exam due to an “exceptional proficiency” in mathematics. The AIME provides an entry window into the AP Exam in Advanced Placement (AP) Mathematics, offered once every year, often on a college-level examination.

What is the average AMC 8 score?
They all competed in the AMC 8 contest from November 10, 2025, to November 16, 2025, and their average score was 22.4. The Mathematical Association of America presented 77 students with the National Awards for the AMC 8. The AMC 8 began broadcasting in the 1980s. The official contest began in 1985 with the AMC 8AMC8. This contest was officially “dual” (and therefore not a third level) in 1997, a split that involved creating two new contests: AMC10 (formally the AMC 10AMC10) and then creating a second-level competition, the AMC 12AMC12. The dual system gradually phased out by 2000, allowing only the official AMCs to be given.
Many different schools provide contest preparation classes to their junior high and high school students; many of these classes use electronic calculators.
AMC 8 Classes
The AMC 8 uses mathematics, arithmetic, counting, geometry, logic, number theory, and probability to assess problem-solving skills. There are ten tests; each test has about 25 multiple-choice questions. The tests are divided into four sections.
AMC 8 test
The AMC 8 is a 40-minute competition for middle schoolers with 25 multiple-choice questions to support the development and strengthening of problem-solving skills. There are no complications that require the use of a calculator, which has been illegal since 2008. The tournament used to be held on a Thursday in November; however, it will now be held in January, beginning in 2025. The scores will be released in the summer. The seven exams include four-response multiple-choice questions with three or fewer possible answers and six-response multiple-choice questions with four or fewer possible answers.
The first seven tests are 40 minutes each; the final three are 50 minutes each. These tests contain four-response, five-response, and six-response multiple choice questions with two blanks in each question. Students can use a calculator for the entire exam except for four-response and five-response multiple-choice questions, which require paper and pencil to solve; four multiple-choice response questions have three or fewer possible answers, while five responses have four or fewer possible answers.
AMC 8 preparation online
Online courses are available to help kids prepare for AMC 8, MATHCOUNTS, and other math competitions. The problems in the course are computational, with numerical or multiple choice answers as the final solution. The tasks are comparable to those seen in real AMC 8 tournaments. The course will assist students in improving their problem-solving skills and their comprehension of the fundamental competition themes. AMC 8 test preparation
The problems in the course are not extremely difficult. Most are computational, with numerical or multiple choice answers as the final solution. The tasks are comparable to those seen in an actual AMC 8 tournament. The course will assist students in improving their problem-solving skills and their comprehension of the fundamental competition themes.
The problems used in AMC 8 courses are presented similarly to those on actual exams. By reviewing and solving the problems numerous times, students can become familiar with how they are written, what they look like, and how they should be completed.
AMC 8 questions
Each of these tests is a 40-minute multiple-choice challenge for students in grades 8 and lower in middle school. The questions are based on topics from the curriculum, which are the same ones seen on the exam itself. The AMC 8 has 25 of the most important math topics and some fun facts about mathematics. Downloadable at the MAA website for those who wish to practice with AAC and EAAC testing software or use it to prepare for a large exam take-home test at home or school. It is also possible to print it.
The curriculum for middle school mathematics is covered. Probability, estimation, percentages, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and understanding graphs are covered. The questions are based on topics in the curriculum, which are the same ones seen in the “County Mathematics Curriculum Standards”. The answers are always numerical, and there are no blanks.
AMC 8 results date
Following the AMC 8 in January, the MAA AMC office will begin emailing official scores and reports early to late February. The email reports are sent out roughly in the sequence we receive the school response forms. Processing and reporting take roughly 3 to 4 weeks from start to finish. Results are reported twice. Results are not mailed to schools, and students do not have to wait for their school to receive reports before viewing their results on the MAA website.
Results will be posted online shortly after they arrive in the office. The AMC 8 results website allows each student to view a personalized score report online, reporting status (awaiting report or released), and the current and final rankings of the student’s state, region, division, and section. The official results can be accessed from February through April via the internet and obtained via regular mail from July through November if needed for college applications or financial aid forms.

Because each student is unique and learns at their rate, we tailor our preparations accordingly. Tutors are available via phone or online to help you better understand the AMC 8.
What grade is AMC 8 for?
The AMC 8 is for students in grades 6, 7, and 8 in middle school. Students in the 4th and 5th grades who are highly motivated are also invited to participate. In years past, the top 100 students in each state, region, division, and section have been selected to participate in the contest. Students should be currently enrolled in 8th grade or lower.
AMC 8 art of problem-solving
Hundreds of free films starring AoPS founder Richard Rusczyk are available at Art of Problem Solving. They provide videos for PreAlgebra, the first half of their Introduction to Algebra, and their Introduction to Counting & Probability. AMC 8 videos MAA AMC offers a variety of videos for students, parents, and teachers. These include the basics of math topics, problem-solving tips, and other tutorials.
AMC 8 scoring rules
The AMC 8 is scored based on the number of questions answered correctly only. There is no penalty for getting a question wrong, and each question has equal value. Thus, a student who answers 23 questions correctly and 2 questions incorrectly receive a score of 23. An additional mathematical achievement is accurately answering all 25 problems.
In February, score reports are mailed to schools, and students receive their results online later that month. Schools order practice exams for their students. Scores are reported twice: once immediately at the end of the contest and a second time after months of review by MAA staff. All solved problems are computer-verified before reporting, and each student receives his or her final score report from MAA AMC in July or August. Only a small fraction of students take the practice tests for education purposes; most score reports will not include these results. All scores are unofficial until released by MAA AMC staff in early spring.
AMC 8 registration
Students seeking to participate must register through their state government. Students can be divided into groups of 2-4 students per group. Students must take at least one practice test, but each participant may take as many as they wish. Teams will be selected from the AMC 8 results by dividing the scores and choosing schools from the top 10% of highest-scoring schools in each state, region, division, and section. In addition, if a high school has 100 or more pupils and does not qualify among school groupings of 10% or more, it will be included in this process.
