  1. A convoy of trucks travels 240 miles in 4 hours. If they need to cover 360 miles total, how much additional time is needed?

    Answer: 2 hours

    Speed = 240/4 = 60 mph. Remaining distance = 360 - 240 = 120 miles. Additional time = 120/60 = 2 hours.

  2. A military discount offers 20% off a $150 pair of boots, then an additional 10% off the discounted price. What is the final price?

    Answer: $108.00

    First discount: $150 × 0.80 = $120. Second discount: $120 × 0.90 = $108.00. Note: Two successive discounts of 20% and 10% are NOT equivalent to a single 30% discount.

  3. A rectangular barracks room measures 12 feet by 15 feet. If carpeting costs $4.50 per square foot, how much will it cost to carpet the room?

    Answer: $810.00

    Area = 12 × 15 = 180 square feet. Cost = 180 × $4.50 = $810.00.

  4. A map uses a scale of 1 inch = 25 miles. If two bases are 3.5 inches apart on the map, what is the actual distance?

    Answer: 87.5 miles

    Actual distance = map distance × scale factor = 3.5 × 25 = 87.5 miles.

  5. If a soldier earns $2,400 per month and saves 12% of their pay, how much will they save in one year?

    Answer: $3,456

    Monthly savings = $2,400 × 0.12 = $288. Annual savings = $288 × 12 = $3,456.

  6. A training exercise requires 5 hours. If the unit has completed 3 hours and 45 minutes, what fraction of the exercise remains?

    Answer: 1/4

    Time completed = 3.75 hours. Time remaining = 5 - 3.75 = 1.25 hours. Fraction remaining = 1.25/5 = 1/4.
