Certification ACSM
The ACSM offers several different certification options for fitness professionals. Each has its own focus, but all have a similar structure and scope of practice. The ACSM Personal Trainer certification qualifies you to work with apparently healthy clients and those with health challenges that can exercise independently. This program also includes the Exercise is Medicine credential, which focuses on the use of health and fitness programs in a healthcare setting.
The first section of the ACSM CPT textbook provides an excellent launch point for your training career. Its coverage of the science and physiology of human movement is far more extensive than other mainstream certifications. However, it falls short in the area of client assessments. In particular, the ACSM CPT curriculum does not cover corrective exercise assessments in the same depth as ACE.
The main ACSM textbook contains the information you need to pass the exam, but additional study materials can make your experience much more efficient and effective. There are a variety of study materials available, including bundled packages and third-party exam prep guides. The latter offer time-tested study techniques that can reduce your studying time by up to 50%.

ACSM Exercise Guidelines
The ACSM’s exercise guidelines are an essential resource for anyone who wants to achieve optimal fitness and health. The ACSM’s guidelines are widely used by healthcare professionals, fitness professionals, and the public to determine the best types of exercises for their specific needs. They are also a crucial tool for identifying and reporting the latest research on exercise guidelines.
The most important aspect of the ACSM’s exercise guidelines is its focus on resistance training. It recommends that most adults do eight to 12 repetitions of each muscle group to a point of fatigue. This will increase their muscular strength and help them maintain fat-free mass. It also recommends that they do two to three days of resistance training per week.
However, the ACSM’s guidelines lack the depth of movement assessments found in other certifications. For example, it devotes upward of four pages to describing the correct technique for Olympic lifts, which is far too detailed to be useful in general fitness settings. The ACSM’s guidelines also rely on a single test for muscular endurance: the push-up test.

ACSM Physical Activity Guidelines
The American College of Sports Medicine is an internationally recognized leader in health-and-fitness education, research and certification. It publishes six leading scholarly journals, several books and various multimedia resources. ACSM’s research and clinical reports help improve the quality of life for people around the world.
ACSM’s fitness training curriculum is geared toward creating safe and effective workout programs for your clients. The first step in this process is a comprehensive initial client consultation that involves subjective and objective reports, as well as medical information when necessary. This allows you to determine your client’s physical fitness level and identify potential health risk factors.
The second step in the ACSM process is to review your clients’ nutrition and dietary habits. This includes evaluating the effectiveness of popular diet trends. For example, a low fat, high carbohydrate diet may help reduce body weight and cardiovascular disease risk but is not suitable for everyone.
The fourth step in the ACSM program is a discussion of corrective exercise assessment and programming for your clients. Unfortunately, this section of the course is less practical than other mainstream certifications. For example, the textbook does not discuss useful functional movement assessments such as static plumb line postural assessments or overhead squat assessments.
