ABMDI Registry 2 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: The ABMDI certification examination is primarily designed to assess competency in which field?
- Clinical forensic nursing
- Medicolegal death investigation (Correct answer)
- Crime scene investigation for law enforcement
- Forensic toxicology laboratory analysis
Correct answer: Medicolegal death investigation
The ABMDI exists specifically to certify competency in medicolegal death investigation, the role performed by MDIs working under medical examiners and coroners.
The ABMDI offers the Diplomate (D-ABMDI) and Fellow (F-ABMDI) credentials. Candidates must meet education and experience requirements, pass a written examination, and demonstrate competency in the core domains of death investigation. The board was established to professionalize and standardize the field of medicolegal death investigation nationwide.
Question 2: Which of the following is a core eligibility requirement to sit for the ABMDI board examination?
- A doctoral degree in forensic science
- Active employment as a medicolegal death investigator (Correct answer)
- A minimum of five years in law enforcement
- Board certification in forensic pathology
Correct answer: Active employment as a medicolegal death investigator
Candidates must be actively working as medicolegal death investigators to be eligible for ABMDI certification, ensuring that examinees have practical field experience.
ABMDI eligibility requirements include active employment as an MDI, a minimum number of supervised death scene investigations, and educational prerequisites. The examination tests knowledge across all domains of death investigation practice. Maintaining certification requires ongoing continuing education credits and periodic recertification.
Question 3: ABMDI continuing education requirements for maintaining certification are intended to ensure that:
- Investigators complete law enforcement training annually
- Certified investigators stay current with evolving best practices in death investigation (Correct answer)
- All MDIs obtain paramedic licensure within five years
- Investigators meet state coroner licensing standards
Correct answer: Certified investigators stay current with evolving best practices in death investigation
Continuing education maintains the quality and currency of certified MDIs knowledge as forensic science and death investigation protocols evolve.
ABMDI-certified investigators must complete continuing education units (CEUs) in topics relevant to medicolegal death investigation. Approved activities include conferences, workshops, webinars, and peer-reviewed publications. Failure to meet CEU requirements results in lapsed certification.
Question 4: What organization publishes the national guidelines that ABMDI certification standards are most closely aligned with?
- American College of Pathologists (ACP)
- National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) (Correct answer)
- FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit
- National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
Correct answer: National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME)
NAME (National Association of Medical Examiners) develops standards for death investigation and autopsy procedures that directly align with ABMDI competency domains.
NAME publishes accreditation standards for medical examiner offices and guidelines for death investigation. The ABMDI competency framework maps closely to NAME standards. NAME's Forensic Autopsy Performance Standards and Death Investigation Checklists serve as foundational references for MDI practice and examination preparation.
Question 5: The Diplomate (D-ABMDI) designation versus the Fellow (F-ABMDI) designation primarily differ in:
- Geographic practice area restrictions
- Level of education and years of experience required (Correct answer)
- Whether the candidate works under a coroner vs. a medical examiner
- Access to law enforcement databases
Correct answer: Level of education and years of experience required
The Fellow designation requires additional education credentials and years of experience compared to the Diplomate designation, representing a higher tier of board certification.
The D-ABMDI is the standard certification level, while the F-ABMDI is an advanced designation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher and additional years of active MDI experience. Both require passing the examination and meeting CEU requirements for recertification.
Question 6: Which of the following best describes the role of the ABMDI in improving medicolegal death investigation nationally?
- It licenses medical examiners to perform autopsies
- It prosecutes MDIs who violate professional standards
- It establishes a voluntary credentialing standard that professionalizes the MDI role (Correct answer)
- It manages federal funding for county coroner offices
Correct answer: It establishes a voluntary credentialing standard that professionalizes the MDI role
The ABMDI is a voluntary credentialing body that sets national competency standards for MDIs, promoting professionalism and consistency in the field.
ABMDI certification is voluntary but increasingly valued by employers. By establishing knowledge and experience standards, the ABMDI elevates the profession, improves consistency in death scene investigations, and supports courts in recognizing qualified expert witnesses.
