To become a licensed real estate salesperson in Wisconsin, candidates must satisfy the pre-licensing education requirements set by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) and the Real Estate Examining Board. Most applicants complete the Board-approved 72-hour Salesperson pre-license course within four years before submitting their application, or alternatively complete 10 academic semester-hour credits in real estate or real estate-related law at an accredited institution. Applicants who already hold a salesperson license in another state (without a Wisconsin reciprocal agreement) may qualify with a shorter 13-hour pre-license program.
After completing pre-licensing education, candidates must pass the Wisconsin Real Estate Salesperson Examination, administered by Pearson VUE. The exam includes a Wisconsin-specific state portion of 140 scored questions (plus 5-10 unscored pretest questions) within a 4-hour time limit, and DSPS sets the passing score at a scaled 75 on a 0-100 scale. Once licensed, salespersons must renew their credential every two years by December 14 of each even-numbered year and complete 18 hours of approved continuing education per renewal cycle.
