UCAT Test Strategy 1

Question 1

In the UCAT, how many sections are there and what is the total testing time?

Accepted Answer

5 sections, approximately 2 hours

Answer

The UCAT has 5 sections: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, and Situational Judgement. Total testing time is approximately 2 hours (121 minutes of question time plus breaks).

Question 2

Which UCAT section has the MOST questions?

Accepted Answer

Abstract Reasoning — 55 questions

Answer

Abstract Reasoning has the highest question count (55) with relatively short time per question (14.4 seconds), making it the most time-pressured section.

Question 3

When should a UCAT candidate use the 'flag and move on' strategy?

Accepted Answer

When a question is taking longer than the per-question time allocation

Answer

Flagging and returning is a core time-management technique. Spending too long on one question risks not reaching others. All UCAT questions carry equal marks.

Question 4

How is the UCAT score reported?

Accepted Answer

Separate scaled scores for each of the first four sections, plus a band (1–4) for Situational Judgement

Answer

Sections 1–4 are each scored 300–900, and a total of 1200–3600 is also calculated. Situational Judgement is reported as a band (1 = highest, 4 = lowest) rather than a scaled score.

Question 5

What is the recommended approach when you find the reading passage in Verbal Reasoning very long?

Accepted Answer

Read the questions first to know what information to look for in the passage

Answer

Reading questions before the passage focuses your reading on relevant sections, saving time. This is a widely taught and effective UCAT verbal reasoning strategy.
