What the SVOP Exam Covers
How to Use This SVOP Study PDF
Print the PDF and work through each question without looking at the answers first. After completing a section, check your responses and review the explanations for any question you missed. Focus extra study time on COLREGs collision avoidance rules and chart reading โ these topics carry the most weight on the Transport Canada SVOP examination.
The SVOP certification is mandatory for masters and mates of near-coastal commercial vessels. Transport Canada approves several course providers, but all must cover the same core curriculum and administer a standardized exam.
Study all 36 COLREGs rules and know right-of-way for every vessel type Practice reading nautical charts including depths, hazards, and buoy symbols Memorize required lights and shapes for power-driven, sailing, and fishing vessels Understand compass variation vs. deviation and how to apply both corrections Know the Beaufort scale wind speed ranges and corresponding sea states Review man overboard recovery procedures for both power and sailing vessels Learn all distress signal types: visual, sound, radio, and pyrotechnic Understand stability and freeboard requirements for small commercial vessels Study firefighting classifications (A, B, C, D) and correct extinguisher use Review Transport Canada near-coastal voyage area definitions and restrictions About the SVOP Certification
The SVOP certificate is issued by Transport Canada and recognized nationally for commercial vessel operations. Candidates must complete an approved training course covering navigation, safety, and vessel operations, then pass the written examination with a minimum passing score. The certificate has no expiry date but operators are expected to maintain current knowledge of regulatory changes.
Commercial mariners who already hold a Master 200 Gross Tonnage or higher certificate are exempt from the SVOP requirement. For all others operating commercially on near-coastal or sheltered waters, the SVOP is a mandatory entry-level credential.
What score do you need to pass the SVOP exam?
Transport Canada requires a minimum passing score of 70% on the SVOP written examination. The exam is administered by an approved Transport Canada training provider after you complete the required course curriculum.
How many questions are on the SVOP exam?
The SVOP examination typically contains around 50 multiple-choice questions covering navigation rules, chart reading, weather, emergency procedures, and vessel stability. The exact number may vary slightly by approved course provider.
Can I use this PDF to study without taking a formal course?
This PDF is a study supplement, not a replacement for Transport Canada approved SVOP training. You must complete an approved course with a certified provider before you are eligible to sit the official examination.
Is the SVOP valid across all Canadian provinces and territories?
Yes. The SVOP certificate is a federal Transport Canada credential and is recognized in all provinces and territories for commercial vessel operations on waters within Canadian jurisdiction.
