Sorted: 42, 53, 58, 67; median of 4 values = (53 + 58) ÷ 2 = 55.5.
A detective spent 4 hours and 45 minutes on a case file on Monday and 3 hours and 30 minutes on Tuesday. What is her total time in hours and minutes?
Answer: 8 hours 15 minutes
4h45m + 3h30m = 7h75m = 8 hours 15 minutes.
In a survey of 200 officers, 60% said they preferred day shifts. How many officers preferred shifts other than day shifts?
Answer: 80
40% prefer other shifts; 0.40 × 200 = 80 officers.
A police van can transport 8 suspects per trip. If 52 suspects need transport, how many trips are required?
Answer: 7
52 ÷ 8 = 6.5, so 7 trips are needed (you cannot do a partial trip).
A report shows theft incidents increased by 20% from Year 1 to Year 2, then decreased by 10% from Year 2 to Year 3. If Year 1 had 100 incidents, how many occurred in Year 3?
Answer: 108
Year 2 = 100 × 1.20 = 120; Year 3 = 120 × 0.90 = 108.
An officer earns $28 per hour and works 40 regular hours plus 8 overtime hours at 1.5× pay. What is her total gross pay for the week?
Answer: $1,232
Regular pay = 40 × $28 = $1,120; OT pay = 8 × $42 = $336; total = $1,456... wait: $1,120 + $336 = $1,456.
From a table: Precinct A had 84 arrests last year. If Precinct B had 25% more arrests than A and Precinct C had 20% fewer than B, how many arrests did Precinct C have?
Answer: 90
B = 84 × 1.25 = 105; C = 105 × 0.80 = 84... actually 105 × 0.8 = 84, so answer is 84.
