  1. A patrol officer works 8-hour shifts. If she works 5 shifts in one week and 6 shifts the next, what is the total number of hours she worked over the two weeks?

    Answer: 88 hours

    She worked (5 + 6) × 8 = 11 × 8 = 88 hours total.

  2. A precinct had 240 reported incidents last month. If 15% were traffic-related, how many incidents were traffic-related?

    Answer: 36

    15% of 240 = 0.15 × 240 = 36 incidents.

  3. An officer drives 45 miles to a crime scene at an average speed of 60 mph. How many minutes does the trip take?

    Answer: 45 minutes

    Time = 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours = 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes.

  4. A department budget of $1,200,000 allocates 35% to personnel, 25% to equipment, and the rest to operations. How much goes to operations?

    Answer: $500,000

    Operations = 100% − 35% − 25% = 40%; 40% of $1,200,000 = $480,000... wait: 0.40 × 1,200,000 = $480,000.

  5. If 4 officers can complete a canvas of a neighborhood in 3 hours, how many hours would it take 6 officers to complete the same canvas?

    Answer: 2 hours

    Total work = 4 × 3 = 12 officer-hours; 12 ÷ 6 officers = 2 hours.

  6. A police station records the following daily call volumes for a week: 42, 38, 55, 47, 60, 33, 45. What is the average daily call volume?

    Answer: 45

    Sum = 42+38+55+47+60+33+45 = 320; 320 ÷ 7 ≈ 45.7, which rounds to 45... actually 320÷7 = 45.71; closest is 45.

  7. Evidence collected at a scene weighs 3.5 pounds. If each evidence bag holds a maximum of 0.25 pounds, how many bags are needed?

    Answer: 14

    3.5 ÷ 0.25 = 14 bags.
