Radiation Health and Safety Test Quality Improvement & Patient Safety 4

Question 1

What is the purpose of a step wedge in a QA program?

Accepted Answer

Evaluating film contrast and density consistency over time

Answer

An aluminum step wedge image is compared over time to detect changes in density and contrast.

Question 2

How should lead aprons be stored to prevent damage and loss of protection?

Accepted Answer

Hung on a rack or laid flat

Answer

Folding or creasing can crack the lead lining, so aprons should hang or lie flat.

Question 3

Which method is used to inspect lead aprons for cracks or holes?

Accepted Answer

Periodic radiographic or fluoroscopic examination and visual checks

Answer

Imaging the apron reveals defects not visible on the surface.

Question 4

Which principle states that exposure to radiation should be kept as low as reasonably achievable?

Accepted Answer

ALARA

Answer

ALARA is the guiding philosophy for minimizing radiation dose.

Question 5

Which technique factor adjustment lowers patient dose when using digital receptors compared with conventional film?

Accepted Answer

Reduced exposure settings are typically possible

Answer

Digital sensors are more sensitive, so exposure can often be reduced while ALARA and shielding still apply.
