Pipe A fills a tank in 6 hours and Pipe B fills the same tank in 4 hours. If both pipes are opened simultaneously, how long will it take to fill the tank?
Answer: 2 hours 24 minutes
Combined rate = 1/6 + 1/4 = 2/12 + 3/12 = 5/12 tanks per hour. Time = 12/5 = 2.4 hours = 2 hours 24 minutes.
A car purchased for $20,000 depreciates by 15% each year. What is the car's value after 2 years?
Answer: $14,450
After year 1: $20,000 × 0.85 = $17,000. After year 2: $17,000 × 0.85 = $14,450. Each year's depreciation applies to the already-reduced value.
A triangle has a base of 12 cm and a height of 8 cm. A rectangle has the same area as the triangle. If the rectangle's length is 6 cm, what is its width?
Answer: 8 cm
Triangle area = ½ × 12 × 8 = 48 cm². Rectangle area = length × width → 48 = 6 × w → w = 8 cm.
A store purchases items at $40 each and sells them at a 35% markup. What is the profit earned per item sold?
Answer: $14
Markup amount = 35% × $40 = 0.35 × 40 = $14. The store earns $14 profit per item.
Three colleagues share a $4,000 bonus in the ratio 2:3:5. How much does the person with the largest share receive?
Answer: $2,000
Total parts = 2 + 3 + 5 = 10. Largest share = 5/10 × $4,000 = $2,000.
