  1. In a group of 50 officers, 30 speak French and 25 speak German. If 10 speak both languages, how many speak neither?

    Answer: 5

    By inclusion-exclusion, French ∪ German = 30 + 25 − 10 = 45; neither = 50 − 45 = 5.

  2. Officer A can complete a report in 6 hours and Officer B can complete it in 4 hours. Working together, how long will it take?

    Answer: 2 hours 24 minutes

    Combined rate = 1/6 + 1/4 = 5/12 per hour; time = 12/5 = 2.4 hours = 2 hours 24 minutes.

  3. A squad has exactly 10 members. If every member shakes hands with every other member exactly once, how many handshakes occur in total?

    Answer: 45

    Number of handshakes = C(10, 2) = 10 × 9 / 2 = 45.

  4. In how many ways can 4 officers be selected from a group of 6 candidates for a special mission?

    Answer: 15

    C(6, 4) = 6! / (4! × 2!) = 30 / 2 = 15 ways.

  5. A 40-liter solution is 20% salt. How many liters of water must be added to reduce the salt concentration to 10%?

    Answer: 40

    Salt = 0.20 × 40 = 8 L; new total for 10% concentration = 8 / 0.10 = 80 L; water to add = 80 − 40 = 40 L.

  6. Complete the sequence: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, ?

    Answer: 49

    Each term is a perfect square: 1², 2², 3², …, 6², so the next term is 7² = 49.

  7. An officer completed 3/5 of a mission briefing in 45 minutes. At the same rate, how long will the entire briefing take?

    Answer: 1 hour 15 minutes

    If 3/5 takes 45 minutes, the full briefing takes 45 ÷ (3/5) = 45 × 5/3 = 75 minutes = 1 hour 15 minutes.
