Ohio's State Tests (OST) are the official statewide assessments administered by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) to measure student achievement across core academic subjects. Designed for students in grades 3 through 11, the OST evaluates mastery of the Ohio Learning Standards — the academic benchmarks that define what Ohio students should know and be able to do at each grade level.
The OST covers three primary subject areas: English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science. Social Studies assessments are also administered at select grade levels. The OST ELA assessments measure reading, writing, and language skills aligned to the Ohio Learning Standards for English Language Arts. Across grades 3–11, students demonstrate their ability to comprehend and analyze literary and informational texts, respond to writing prompts, and apply grammar, vocabulary, and language conventions.
Reading questions on the OST ELA test address two major text types: literary texts (fiction, poetry, drama) and informational texts (nonfiction, technical writing, persuasive essays). Students must identify central ideas and themes, analyze author's craft and structure, evaluate arguments and evidence, and compare multiple sources. Constructed-response items require written explanations that cite textual evidence.
The writing component of OST ELA includes extended-response tasks — most notably the performance task, where students read multiple sources and write an essay that synthesizes information or develops an argument. Writing is scored on organization, use of evidence, elaboration, and language conventions. Vocabulary questions assess the ability to determine word meaning in context, understand figurative language, and recognize relationships between words.
OST Math assessments are built around the Ohio Learning Standards for Mathematics and span grades 3 through 11. The content shifts progressively from foundational arithmetic and number sense in the early grades to algebraic reasoning, functions, statistics, and higher mathematics at the high school level.
In grades 3–5, the OST Math focuses on operations with whole numbers and fractions, place value, measurement, geometric concepts, and data interpretation. By grades 6–8, students work with ratios, proportional relationships, expressions and equations, functions, geometry (area, surface area, volume, transformations), and statistics and probability. In grades 9–11, OST Math assesses topics across Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II including linear and quadratic functions, polynomials, systems of equations, congruence, similarity, trigonometry, and statistical modeling.
The OST Math includes both multiple-choice items and technology-enhanced items (drag-and-drop, fill-in, graphing). Some grades include a calculator section and a non-calculator section, testing both computational fluency and conceptual understanding.
The OST Science assessment is administered at grades 5, 8, and 11. These tests measure student understanding of life science, physical science, and earth and space science as defined by the Ohio Learning Standards for Science.
At grade 5, OST Science covers Earth's systems, ecosystems, the solar system, and properties of matter. At grade 8, the content expands to include weather and climate, heredity and evolution, forces and motion, and energy transformations. At grade 11 (the high school assessment), students are tested on topics from Biology, Physical Science, or Earth Science depending on their course pathway. Science questions include multiple-choice, short-answer, and data analysis items that require interpreting tables, graphs, and experimental setups.
Social Studies OST assessments are given at grades 5 and 8. The grade 5 test focuses on United States history, geography, government, and economics from early American history through the Civil War era. The grade 8 assessment covers early American history, the founding documents, Westward Expansion, and the causes of the Civil War. Both tests include multiple-choice questions and constructed-response items that require students to analyze primary sources, maps, and historical data.
OST results are reported using five performance levels that describe a student's level of mastery relative to the Ohio Learning Standards:
Schools and districts use OST results to identify students who need intervention, evaluate curriculum effectiveness, and satisfy state and federal accountability requirements under Ohio's School Report Card system. Each school receives letter grades (A–F) in categories including Achievement, Progress, and Gap Closing, all of which are influenced by OST performance data.
The OST plays a direct role in Ohio's high school graduation requirements. Students who take the 10th-grade OST ELA and Math assessments can use their scores toward one of Ohio's graduation pathways. A "Proficient" score (or higher) on both the 10th-grade ELA and Math OST tests satisfies the "State Diploma with Honors" testing component and counts as evidence of readiness under the Diploma with Honors criteria.
Ohio offers multiple graduation pathways beyond OST scores alone — including industry credentials, workforce readiness scores, and military enlistment — but strong OST performance in 10th grade remains one of the most straightforward routes to meeting state graduation standards. For students aiming for the Ohio Honors Diploma, OST scores are one of several criteria evaluated.
The OST replaced Ohio's earlier Ohio Graduation Test (OGT), which was administered to 10th graders across five subject areas. Unlike the OGT — a single high-stakes test taken once in 10th grade — the OST is a longitudinal system of annual assessments from grade 3 onward. This shift reflects Ohio's move toward measuring student growth and progress year over year rather than relying on a single end-of-high-school exam. The OST's integration with Ohio's School Report Card and its multi-grade design give educators and families much more detailed, actionable data about student achievement throughout their school years.
OST data feeds directly into Ohio's School Report Card, which rates schools and districts across multiple performance components. The Achievement component is heavily weighted by the percentage of students scoring Proficient or above on OST subject-area tests. The Progress component measures individual student growth from year to year using OST scores. The Gap Closing component evaluates how well schools are serving historically underserved student groups, including students with disabilities, English learners, and economically disadvantaged students. Because OST scores are central to every major accountability metric on Ohio's report card, preparing thoroughly for these assessments benefits both individual students and the broader school community.

Look for patterns in your errors — do they cluster around a particular skill (inference, equation solving, data analysis) or a particular subject area? Focus your remaining study time on those gaps.
