  1. A patrol officer is facing west and makes two consecutive 90-degree turns to the right. What direction is the officer now facing?

    Answer: East

Starting facing west, the first 90-degree right turn rotates the officer to face north. The second 90-degree right turn then rotates the officer to face east.

  2. A suspect flees south for 2 blocks, then turns left and runs 3 blocks, then turns left again and runs 2 blocks. In what direction is the suspect now traveling?

    Answer: North

Moving south, a left turn points the suspect east. A second left turn from east points the suspect north. The suspect is now traveling north.

  3. On a precinct map, the police station is directly north of the courthouse, and the DMV office is directly east of the courthouse. An officer stands at the courthouse facing the police station. Is the DMV to the officer's left or right?

    Answer: Right

Facing north toward the police station, east is always to the right. Since the DMV is east of the courthouse, it is to the officer's right.

  4. A patrol car is heading east on a city street. It turns right at the first intersection, then turns right again at the next intersection. What direction is the patrol car now heading?

    Answer: West

Heading east, a right turn points the car south. A second right turn from south points the car west. Two consecutive right turns always result in the opposite of the original direction.

  5. A police station's main entrance is on the north side of the building. An officer enters through the main entrance and walks straight toward the back of the building, then turns left to reach the records room. In what direction is the officer now facing?

    Answer: East

Entering from the north side of the building, the officer walks south toward the back. Turning left from a southward direction means turning east. The officer is now facing east.

  6. A floor plan shows a square room with its door on the south wall and a window on the west wall. The entire plan is then rotated 180 degrees. After the rotation, on which wall is the door located?

    Answer: North

A 180-degree rotation reverses every direction to its opposite: south becomes north, north becomes south, east becomes west, and west becomes east. The door, originally on the south wall, is now on the north wall.
