  1. A car travels 360 km in 4.5 hours. How far would it travel in 7.5 hours at the same speed?

    Answer: 600 km

    Speed = 360 ÷ 4.5 = 80 km/h; Distance = 80 × 7.5 = 600 km.

  2. Two people start from points 300 km apart and walk toward each other. One walks at 12 km/h and the other at 18 km/h. How many hours until they meet?

    Answer: 10 hours

    Combined speed = 12 + 18 = 30 km/h; Time = 300 ÷ 30 = 10 hours.

  3. A truck travels the first half of a journey at 40 km/h and the second half at 60 km/h. What is the average speed for the entire trip?

    Answer: 48 km/h

    Harmonic mean: 2 × 40 × 60 ÷ (40 + 60) = 4800 ÷ 100 = 48 km/h.

  4. A train passes a 600 m bridge in 30 seconds and a 300 m bridge in 18 seconds. What is the train's speed in m/s?

    Answer: 25 m/s

    Setting (L+600)/30 = (L+300)/18 gives L = 150 m; Speed = (150+600)/30 = 25 m/s.

  5. A plane flying at 900 km/h takes 2 hours 20 minutes to travel from city X to city Y. How long does a plane flying at 750 km/h take to cover the same distance?

    Answer: 2 hr 48 min

    Distance = 900 × (7/3) = 2100 km; Time = 2100 ÷ 750 = 2.8 hours = 2 hr 48 min.

  6. A boat goes 30 km upstream in 3 hours and 36 km downstream in 2 hours. What is the speed of the stream?

    Answer: 4 km/h

    Upstream speed = 10 km/h; Downstream speed = 18 km/h; Stream speed = (18 − 10) ÷ 2 = 4 km/h.

  7. A car increases its speed by 20% for a 360 km journey. If its original speed was 60 km/h, how much time is saved?

    Answer: 1 hour

    Original time = 6 hrs; New speed = 72 km/h; New time = 5 hrs; Saved = 1 hour.
