A rescue team covers 2.5 miles of terrain in 45 minutes. At this rate, how long will it take them to cover 10 miles?
Answer: 3 hours
10 ÷ 2.5 = 4 intervals of 45 minutes = 180 minutes = 3 hours.
A fire station's budget is $840,000. If equipment costs account for 37.5% of the budget, how much is spent on equipment?
Answer: $315,000
840,000 × 0.375 = $315,000.
A water tank drains at 75 gallons per minute. A pump adds water at 120 gallons per minute. If the tank has 600 gallons initially, how many gallons will it contain after 10 minutes?
Answer: 1,050
Net gain = 120 − 75 = 45 gal/min; after 10 min = 450 gallons added; 600 + 450 = 1,050 gallons.
Firefighters laid hose in three sections measuring 150 ft, 225 ft, and 175 ft. They then removed a 50-ft section for a different deployment. What is the total remaining hose length?
Answer: 500 ft
150 + 225 + 175 = 550 ft; 550 − 50 = 500 ft.
A fire extinguisher weighing 12 lbs is placed on a shelf 5 feet from the floor. A second extinguisher weighing 18 lbs is on a shelf 3 feet from the floor. What is the combined weight of both extinguishers?
Answer: 30 lbs
12 + 18 = 30 lbs (shelf heights are irrelevant to total weight).
If Station A handles 20% more calls than Station B, and Station B handles 250 calls per month, how many calls does Station A handle?
Answer: 300
250 × 1.20 = 300 calls per month.
A rectangular burn area measures 800 meters by 600 meters. What is the perimeter of the burn area in meters?
Answer: 2,800
Perimeter = 2 × (800 + 600) = 2 × 1,400 = 2,800 meters.
