New Zealand Motorbike Driving Test New Zealand Motorbike Driving Speed Limits, Following Distance and Overtaking

Question 1

Unless signs show otherwise, what is the usual speed limit in a New Zealand urban area?

Accepted Answer

50 km/h

Answer

The usual speed limit in urban areas with street lighting is 50 km/h unless a sign shows a different limit.

Question 2

In good conditions, what is the minimum safe following distance behind another vehicle?

Accepted Answer

2 seconds

Answer

The 2-second rule gives you enough time to react and stop in good, dry conditions.

Question 3

In wet or slippery conditions, what following distance should you leave?

Accepted Answer

At least 4 seconds

Answer

Wet roads give less grip and longer stopping distances, so double the gap to at least 4 seconds.

Question 4

What is the maximum speed when passing a school bus that has stopped to let children on or off?

Accepted Answer

20 km/h

Answer

You must not go faster than 20 km/h when passing a stopped school bus, in either direction, because children may run onto the road.

Question 5

You see a solid yellow line on your side of the centre line. What does it mean?

Accepted Answer

You must not cross it to overtake

Answer

A solid yellow no-passing line on your side means it is unsafe to overtake there, and you must not cross it to pass.
