✍️ Sample NEBOSH CC Questions & Answers
1. When should a competent person inspect an excavation after heavy rainfall?
After heavy rainfall, a competent person must inspect the excavation before any workers are allowed to re-enter. Rainfall can significantly weaken soil, increase water pressure and raise the risk of collapse.
2. What is the fire safety significance of 'escape route integrity' on a construction site?
Escape route integrity means keeping escape routes clear of obstructions, maintaining emergency lighting and signs, protecting routes with fire-resistant construction where necessary, and ensuring routes lead directly to a place of safety.
3. What fire safety record-keeping is required under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005?
Under the FSO 2005, the responsible person must keep records of fire risk assessments and their reviews, fire safety training completed, fire drills, maintenance of fire safety equipment and any fire incidents. These must be available for inspection by the fire authority.
4. What is the primary risk when using a MEWP in windy conditions?
Wind exerts significant forces on the elevated platform of a MEWP. In high winds, the risk of the MEWP overturning increases substantially. Manufacturers specify maximum wind speeds for safe operation that must not be exceeded.
5. What symptoms characterise the early stages of hand-arm vibration syndrome?
Early symptoms of HAVS include tingling and numbness in the fingers (often more noticeable after using vibrating tools or in cold conditions), followed later by blanching (whitening) of the fingers, known as vibration white finger.
6. What is the safe distance that should be maintained from overhead power lines when using plant such as cranes or excavators?
The safe working distance from uninsulated overhead lines depends on voltage, but for lines up to 33kV, a minimum exclusion zone of 3 metres is typically required. Higher voltage lines require greater distances and specialist assessment.
