To become a Nebraska Notary Public, applicants must first pass the state's official Nebraska Notary Exam, administered online through ClassMarker. The exam covers 20 questions on notarial duties and Nebraska notary statutes (Neb. Rev. Stat. Chapter 64), and applicants must score at least 85% to pass. You get up to three attempts, and a passing certificate is valid for 90 days from the date of the exam.
After passing the exam, applicants must obtain a $30 notary surety bond and complete the Secretary of State's online notary application, which carries a $30 filing fee. All notary filings in Nebraska are handled online through the business.nebraska.gov portal — paper applications have not been accepted since December 31, 2023.
Eligible applicants must be at least 19 years old, be a U.S. citizen or qualified alien, reside in Nebraska (or a bordering state with a regular place of work in Nebraska), and have no felony or fraud/dishonesty conviction within the previous five years. Once commissioned, a Nebraska notary public serves a four-year term before renewal is required (Neb. Rev. Stat. §64-101).
