NDIT Report Writing and Courtroom Testimony

Question 1

Which quality is most essential in an investigative report?

Accepted Answer

Accuracy and objectivity

Answer

Reports should record facts accurately and objectively. Opinions and emotional language weaken credibility and can be used against the investigator on cross-examination.

Question 2

Field notes should ideally be taken:

Accepted Answer

As soon as practical during or immediately after the event

Answer

Contemporaneous notes are more accurate and carry more weight. Courts often allow a witness to refresh recollection from notes made close to the event.

Question 3

Which approach is best for a witness answering questions on cross-examination?

Accepted Answer

Listen to the question, answer only what is asked, and say so if you don't know

Answer

Truthful, concise answers that stay within the question are most credible. Guessing or volunteering unrequested material gives opposing counsel openings.

Question 4

Which sentence is the better example of objective report writing?

Accepted Answer

'The subject exited the vehicle at 2:14 p.m. and entered the building carrying a black bag.'

Answer

Specific, observable facts with time and detail are objective. Words like 'guilty' and 'suspiciously' are conclusions that don't record what was seen.

Question 5

The 'who, what, when, where, why and how' framework in report writing is used to:

Accepted Answer

Ensure the report covers the essential facts of the matter

Answer

These six questions are a checklist that helps make sure a report is complete and organized.
