A car travels 120 km on 10 litres of petrol. How many litres are needed to travel 300 km?
Answer: 25 litres
Rate = 10/120 = 1/12 litre per km; fuel for 300 km = 300 × (1/12) = 25 litres.
Two towns are 4.5 cm apart on a map with a scale of 1:200 000. What is the actual distance in kilometres?
Answer: 9 km
4.5 cm × 200 000 = 900 000 cm = 9 000 m = 9 km.
Almond milk and oat milk are blended in the ratio 2:3. If 240 ml of almond milk is used, how many ml of the blend is produced?
Answer: 600 ml
If 2 parts = 240 ml, 1 part = 120 ml; total = 5 parts = 5 × 120 = 600 ml.
A factory produces 450 items in 9 hours. At the same rate, how many items will be produced in 14 hours?
Answer: 700
Rate = 450 ÷ 9 = 50 items/hr; production in 14 hr = 50 × 14 = 700.
The ratio of boys to girls in a class is 4:5. If there are 45 girls, how many students are in the class?
Answer: 81
If 5 parts = 45 girls, then 1 part = 9; boys = 4 × 9 = 36; total = 36 + 45 = 81 students.
Water flows out of a tank at a rate of 15 litres per minute. How many litres will flow out in 1 hour and 20 minutes?
Answer: 1 200 litres
1 hour 20 min = 80 minutes; volume = 15 × 80 = 1 200 litres.
A recipe calls for 250 g of butter to make 40 cookies. How many grams of butter are needed to make 100 cookies?
Answer: 625 g
Butter per cookie = 250 ÷ 40 = 6.25 g; for 100 cookies = 6.25 × 100 = 625 g.
