A recipe requires sugar and flour in the ratio 1:4. If you use 150 g of sugar, how much flour do you need?
Answer: 600 g
Flour = 4 × 150 = 600 g.
A 240 km drive takes 3 hours. A second drive covers 160 km at the same speed. How long does the second drive take?
Answer: 2 hours
Speed = 240 ÷ 3 = 80 km/h; time = 160 ÷ 80 = 2 hours.
On a map with scale 1:250 000, what length on the map represents an actual distance of 50 km?
Answer: 20 cm
50 km = 5 000 000 cm; map length = 5 000 000 ÷ 250 000 = 20 cm.
A worker earns R1 500 for working 40 hours. How much will she earn for working 52 hours at the same rate?
Answer: R1 950
Hourly rate = 1 500 ÷ 40 = R37.50; earnings = 37.50 × 52 = R1 950.
A 500 ml bottle of shampoo costs R45. A 750 ml bottle of the same brand costs R63. Which gives better value for money?
Answer: 750 ml bottle
500 ml: R45/500 = R0.09/ml; 750 ml: R63/750 = R0.084/ml — the 750 ml bottle is cheaper per ml.
A pipe of length 3.6 m is cut in the ratio 1:2:3. What is the length of the longest piece?
Answer: 1.8 m
Total parts = 1+2+3 = 6; longest = (3/6) × 3.6 = 1.8 m.
If 6 identical printers can print 900 pages per hour, how many pages can 10 identical printers print per hour?
Answer: 1 500 pages
Rate per printer = 900 ÷ 6 = 150 pages/hr; 10 printers = 10 × 150 = 1 500 pages.
