Question 1

Which hormone primarily stimulates milk production by the alveolar cells?

Accepted Answer

Prolactin

Answer

Prolactin, released in response to suckling and falling progesterone after placental delivery, stimulates milk synthesis.

Question 2

Which hormone is responsible for the milk ejection (let-down) reflex?

Accepted Answer

Oxytocin

Answer

Infant suckling stimulates oxytocin release, which contracts the myoepithelial cells around the alveoli and ejects milk. Prolactin drives milk production, not ejection.

Question 3

Which of the following is a sign of effective latch and milk transfer?

Accepted Answer

Audible swallowing with a wide gape and chin touching the breast

Answer

A wide gape, chin pressed into the breast, rhythmic sucking, and audible swallowing indicate good latch and transfer. Clicking, dimpling, and pain suggest a poor latch.

Question 4

Which describes colostrum?

Accepted Answer

Low in volume and rich in protein and immunoglobulins

Answer

Colostrum is produced in small volumes in the first days, is rich in secretory IgA and protein, and meets the newborn's needs while the mother's milk comes in.

Question 5

Which is the best initial management of early mastitis?

Accepted Answer

Continue frequent breastfeeding or milk removal, with rest and fluids

Answer

Effective milk removal is a cornerstone of managing mastitis. Weaning abruptly can worsen engorgement, and antibiotics are added if symptoms persist or the mother is systemically ill.
