What the MTTC is and how it works

According to Michigan Department of Education (MDE), Office of Educator Excellence. The exams are developed, administered and scored, “Individuals should not take an MTTC without first being directed to by either MDE or a preparation program.”[4]

The MTTC is the test program used for educator certification by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), Office of Educator Excellence. MDE says you should not choose a test on your own. Take an MTTC test only when MDE or your preparation program has directed you to.

All MTTC tests are computer-based and taken at test centers by appointment only. Most are available year-round, Monday through Saturday except some holidays. Test centers are spread across the United States, its territories and Canada, with 12 or more locations in Michigan. You register and pay on the MTTC website. Appointments are first-come, first-served, so book early if you need a particular date.

Format and fee differ by test. Elementary Education (103) has 150 multiple-choice questions and a $129 test fee, and its last administration date is December 20, 2026. Professional Knowledge and Skills (5–9) (135) has 50 multiple-choice questions and a $59 test fee. Additional fees may apply. The passing score is 220 on a scaled score, and scores are released within 6 weeks of testing.

You can retake a test as many times as you need, but you must wait 30 days between attempts of the same test. If you retest inside that window, the scores on the second attempt are voided. A passing subject-area score stays valid for 5 years. For your own test, check its page on the MTTC website for the current format and fee.

Worked examples: how to reason through MTTC questions

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: In a food web, an organism that can occupy both the second and third trophic levels is called a(n):

  1. Producer
  2. Omnivore
  3. Apex predator
  4. Detritivore

Answer: B. Omnivore

Explanation:

B, Omnivore, is correct. An omnivore eats both plants and animals. When it eats plants it is a primary consumer, which is the second trophic level. When it eats herbivores it is a secondary consumer, which is the third trophic level.

Rule to remember: an organism's trophic level depends on what it eats, so a mixed diet can put it on several levels.

Example 2

Question: Which of the following would be initially affected by government aircraft purchases?

  1. Payment for Goods and Services
  2. Goods and Services
  3. Land, Labor, Capital
  4. Rent, Wages, Interest

Answer: A. Payment for Goods and Services

Explanation:

A, Payment for Goods and Services, is correct. In the circular-flow model, money and real items move in opposite directions. When the government buys aircraft, the immediate effect is a money payment to firms in the product market.

Rule to remember: spending enters the circular flow as a money payment in the product market. Factor payments happen later, in the resource market.

Example 3

Question: Which statement best describes the trend in atomic radius across a period (left to right) in the periodic table?

  1. Atomic radius increases because more protons are added
  2. Atomic radius decreases because nuclear charge increases without adding new energy levels
  3. Atomic radius stays constant across a period
  4. Atomic radius increases because more electrons are added to outer shells

Answer: B. Atomic radius decreases because nuclear charge increases without adding new energy levels

Explanation:

B is correct. Moving left to right across a period, each element adds a proton, so nuclear charge rises. The added electrons go into the same outer energy level, and shielding from inner electrons stays about the same. The stronger nucleus pulls the outer electrons closer, so the atom gets smaller.

Rule to remember: across a period, radius shrinks as nuclear charge grows. Down a group, radius grows as new energy levels are added.

How to use these practice tests

Start by confirming which MTTC test MDE or your preparation program has told you to take. Then open that test's page on the MTTC website and note its format, fee and any test framework it publishes. Use that official page as your guide to what the test covers.

Next, take the practice set here that matches your subject, such as MTTC Mathematics, MTTC Biology or MTTC English Language Arts. Answer without notes so you can see where you stand. Read every explanation, including for questions you got right, and keep a short list of the rules you missed. Review those areas in the official framework and your course materials before you practise again. If your program also points you to MTTC Professional Readiness, add that set to your routine.

As test day gets close, work through a full set under timed conditions to practise pacing. Check your appointment details on the MTTC website. Remember that you must wait 30 days between attempts of the same test, so pick a date that leaves room for a retake within your program's timeline. When you are ready, go to the main practice test.

MTTC FAQ

How much does an MTTC test cost?

It depends on the test. Elementary Education (103) has a $129 test fee, and Professional Knowledge and Skills (5–9) (135) has a $59 test fee. Additional fees may apply to both. You pay when you register on the MTTC website. Check your own test's page there for its current fee.

What score do I need to pass the MTTC?

The passing score is 220 on a scaled score. A scaled score is not the same as the percentage of questions you answered correctly, so a practice-set percentage cannot be turned directly into an MTTC score. Use practice results to find weak areas, and use the official test page for scoring details.

How soon can I retake an MTTC test?

You can retake a test as many times as you need, but you must wait 30 days between attempts of the same test. If you take the same test again inside that 30-day period, your scores on the second attempt are voided. Plan your retake date with that wait in mind.

When will I get my MTTC scores?

Scores are released within 6 weeks of testing. If you have a certification or program deadline, plan around that window, and keep in mind the 30-day wait before you can retake the same test if you need to.

Can I sign up for any MTTC test I want?

MDE advises against it. Its guidance says you should not take an MTTC test without first being directed to by MDE or a preparation program. Confirm which test you need before you register and pay on the MTTC website, so you do not spend a fee on the wrong test.

How long does a passing MTTC score stay valid?

A passing score on a subject area test stays valid for 5 years, according to MDE. If you are thinking about when to test, make sure that period covers the date you plan to apply for certification. MDE's MTTC testing page has the current guidance.

How many questions are on the MTTC?

The MTTC Elementary Education (103) test is a computer-based test with 150 multiple-choice questions. (Verified Oct 22, 2026 against Michigan Department of Education (MDE), Office of Educator Excellence. The exams are developed, administered and scored.)
