  1. A map uses a scale of 1 inch = 50 miles. Two cities are 3.5 inches apart on the map. What is the actual distance?

    Answer: 175 miles

    Actual distance = 3.5 × 50 = 175 miles.

  2. A pool holds 12,000 gallons and loses water at 50 gallons per hour due to evaporation. A pump refills it at 35 gallons per hour. How many hours until the pool is empty if it starts full?

    Answer: 800 hours

    Net loss = 50 − 35 = 15 gal/hr; time = 12,000 / 15 = 800 hours.

  3. A store buys an item for $45 and marks it up by 60%. Then it goes on sale for 25% off the marked price. What is the sale price?

    Answer: $54.00

    Marked price = 45 × 1.60 = $72; sale price = 72 × 0.75 = $54.00.

  4. The sum of three consecutive odd integers is 81. What is the largest of the three?

    Answer: 29

    Let n, n+2, n+4; then 3n + 6 = 81 → n = 25; largest = 29.

  5. A triangle has angles in the ratio 2:3:5. What is the measure of the largest angle?

    Answer: 90°

    Parts total = 2+3+5 = 10; largest angle = (5/10) × 180° = 90°.

  6. A mixture of 10 liters is 20% alcohol. How many liters of pure alcohol must be added to make it 50% alcohol?

    Answer: 6 liters

    2 + x = 0.50(10 + x) → 2 + x = 5 + 0.5x → 0.5x = 3 → x = 6 liters.

  7. A square's side is increased by 20%. By what percent does the area increase?

    Answer: 44%

    New area = (1.2s)² = 1.44s²; increase = 44%.
