  1. Simplify the expression: 4(3x − 2) − 2(x + 5)

    Answer: 10x − 18

    4(3x − 2) = 12x − 8 and 2(x + 5) = 2x + 10; subtracting gives 10x − 18.

  2. If 3/5 of a number is 24, what is the number?

    Answer: 40

    If (3/5)n = 24, then n = 24 × (5/3) = 40.

  3. What is the prime factorization of 60?

    Answer: 2² × 3 × 5

    60 = 2 × 30 = 2 × 2 × 15 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 5 = 2² × 3 × 5.

  4. A student scores 85, 92, 78, and 95 on four tests. What score is needed on the fifth test to have an average of 88?

    Answer: 90

    The sum needed for an average of 88 over 5 tests is 440; the current sum is 350; so 440 − 350 = 90 is needed.

  5. Which inequality is equivalent to −2x > 8?

    Answer: x < −4

    Dividing both sides by −2 and flipping the inequality sign gives x < −4.

  6. What is the value of 2³ + 3² − 4¹?

    Answer: 13

    2³ = 8, 3² = 9, 4¹ = 4; so 8 + 9 − 4 = 13.

  7. A jacket is on sale for 30% off its original price of $120. What is the sale price?

    Answer: $84

    30% of $120 = $36 discount; sale price = $120 − $36 = $84.
